theres always people hanging around the car parks at Leighton,

cant believe that someone has the nerve to do that there.

seems whenever im there or driving past someone is rigging a windsurfer etc nearbye etc

they must be quick and quiet when they do it

luke

see below for excerpt of my post yesterday. goto www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4495 for the full detail. anyway maybe worth giving this "Inspector Gary Budge" mentioned in the letter a call...

...

South Metropolitan Police District has been aware of the problem being experienced by kite surfers and as such has initiated convert operations at Leighton Beach and Woodman's Point aimed at apprehending those responsible. More regular patrols have also been initiated aimed at detering those involved.

...

I trust the information provided clarifies the position however if you have any further concerns Inspector Gary Budge can be contacted direct at the Fremantle Police Complex on 9430 1295.

I'm glad they didn't get any of my gear, I'd rather lose my shorts any day, as long as i'm not wearing them

thought for the evening - how come all these breakins seem to be on kiters cars? i thought it was just a general thing but if this and the previous threads stack up, and the police think kiters are the people getting broken into rather than other people, then maybe it is. it doesn't seem to be a question of what's lost, most people posting seem to lose small cash or cd's more than a kite or board.

anyway, it seems its only or mostly kiters. i haven't been hit but have been there when other have and they were both kiters. and i just searched the windsurfers website and couldn't find anything with "break in" or "leighton". does this dude only target that one spot? and if he does - would be interested in feedback on this - then that might be somethign more to go to the cops with.

unlikely to end up stopping i guess. but if it is only or mostly kiters and mostly at that one carpark, then there's a couple of other things that flow from that. either he's got a lookout (watch for people standing on the top of the dune, whether your unloading or kiting or whatever) or he's watching from somewhere else. if he's watching then there must be way of the police or kiters sussing out where from. this bloke needs to be nailed. not that i'm advocating a bunch of vigilantes beating the crap out of him. except in the nicest possible way of course...

Sorry to hear about your car being broken into.

I can assure you it was not the guy with the Falcon with the NSW plates as that car was one I was renting at the time as I was on holiday kitesurfing at Leighton at the time.

I do remember a guy pulling into the car park taking a look round and driving off after taking a quick look around which I thought seemed odd, but maybee that was you.

As for the rest of the comments I will ignore as I can understand you must have been pissed off at the time.

Hi Graz,

Wasn't blaming you, I figured it couldn't have been as I saw you land a blokes kite. Just seemed dodgy that you were hanging there for a while, then left as soon as I came in. It was my white van to the left of yours. Did you see anyone looking dodgy around it (apart from me)? Sorry for the description, you're right, I was pissed off. Sincerest apologies graz, I'll see you out there!

Apologies accepted. I did see a car pull into the car park and he left when I looked up at him, that as partly the reason why I left to look for somewhere else as I had heard about breakins on this forum, at the time I had my passport and a load of money on me as I had not checked into my hotel.

I remember a guy with dark skin, probably caucasian with brown hair wearing sunnies. Cannot remember the type of car only that it was a saloon.

I did go back to the car park later when more people where there and did go kitesurfing but when I got back to the car I misplaced my keys and could not get in (thought I had locked them in the trunk) but found them in my backpack, thats why it may have looked dodgy.

Hope this is some help.

ps had a great time over there and hope to go back as soon as I can afford it.

Good to see this string.

I feel that perhaps it is the tightness of the kiting comm. (people look out after each other)why such observations are noted in this forum. Good on us all.

"Thieves" are not targeting kiters at all.....to this low life, everything is game.

Nice to see that the police seem to think that it is the kiters that are being targeted; that could be due to the large response the Councils have received from this Forum.

Thievery is not only bad to kiters, but our whole community....slowly...slowly things will improve.

Not to discredit the work of the police at all, as I think that all in all they are doing their best with unbelievable braisen and guilt free thugs that are breaking into the cars,

BUT I do find the below philosophy very WEAK, for a way of preventing this happening

"I have instructed our Crime Prevention Unit to attend Leighton Beach to review signage placed within the car park outlining the "Look, Lock, Leave" philosophy"

OK, we all arrive at Leighton, we go and look at the wind, we then check out whos around to see if anyone dodgy, or that there are plenty of others around so get some sense of security .

1. DONE

We then lock our cars and do something with the keys ??, generally shove them in the wetsuit around a bit of string etc etc...

2. DONE

We then go kiting for 2 hours - so we leave
3. DONE

The problem is, how exactly does this philosophy stop someone recognising that the car is a kiters car, and, therefore they wont be back for a while, and, therefore they can willynilly break the window and get whatever they feel like

I dont get it.

Yeh me too. I was tempted to whack a heap of cool lookin stickers on my car when i bought my rig, but then i thought a sign saying "this car is full of heaps of really expensive **** and i won't be back for ages" would be even better! Wouldn't fit across the screen though...
Honestly everyone likes to be fashionable but stickers are a dead set giveaway to knob-end thievy types.
I def have a good look around every time I go out even though I only have one set of gear, just to let any watchers know we are becoming vigilant.

Andy,

you prolly see on ebay:

BIG kite for sale:
60 foot ropes, 8m long and 1.5m wide.
7 blow-up things down the middle.
bargain at $50.00 - or will swap for crack.

i'm seriously thinking of spray painting something across my kites to make them id-able.

i feel for ya.

i think the spray painting accross the kite is a good idea...it doesnt have to be an ugly "X" accross it, but somthin a little more stylish. I come from a sailing background, and i found a stolen sail on the side of the road (worth about $3k), anyway i contacted a few forums and within 6 hours i found out who's sail it was...all they had to do was discribe the sail number and colour, and it was done.

so why dont we all get a number system happening, and stensil-spray them on-to our kites, kinda like a VIN number on a car, but much more visable. maybe the last few didgets of ya car licence or d.o.b or somthing..

just a thought, id hate to get ma new kite stolen, i'd cry

strip of material with mobile number written in waterproof ink stitched somewhere secure. or even loop it through a pig tail thats not being used. no weight. no drag. nothing stopping it being cut off though... will keep thinking.

Guys n gals,
now is probably the best time to hassle your local member for some or any action.
Any thoughts on dummy surveilance cameras and signs at the hot spots?
Cost = bugger all, so will appeal to the limp members of partymate (eh, parliment).
Hassle these slackers the only year in 4 that they give a durn...

I don't know if you all know, but all kite (that I have seen) have a serial number. I suggest you write this down as soon as you buy it so you can track it down if it gets nicked. Its usually on the Patent Tag on the wingtip (newer kites) or somewhere around the centre of the LE on older ones.

maybe we should hire a security guy for a few hours per day?? ...everybody chips in and then we'd feel heaps better on the water... or pay someone's girlfriend with bionic eyes!
