Forgot to post this a couple of weeks ago but there I was kooking along at flozzer - just out from the groin - when bugger me but a tuna jumped right outta the water about 10m directly in front!!

Now I am no salty barnacle encrusted fisherbloke but i have seen tuna, and jumping, up north and I am pretty sure the little barrel shaped bugger was a future can man.

Might have had a flash of yellow on the fin but I reckon the toona was about a 14 inches long (easy to guess as I can make that length comparison everyday ) and it got about 2 foot outta the drink with a classic arc before nosediving back into the H2O.

Had me interested as to whether anyone else has seen one around the metro and if they ever get down here

Had me also wondering if there was a Noah in pursuit also?? Then again I am a girl's blouse at any possiblity of a greay suit showing up.

At that size more likely to be a Bonito.

I've almost run over a dolphin off Trigg (at least I think was, it want down instead of sideways like a grey-suit).

Also almost hit an XL seal at Rotto who popped up about 5m in front of me.

Both occasions made me quite nervous...

no tuna for me other than those that come in a can. I did however nearly get collected by a flying fish once... and another time a bl00dy great humpback surfaced not 2m from me... that one sure browned my wetty! crazy place for sealife this perth metro..

Hey GF,

In shore so close it would have been a Tuna Mackeral. They look a bit like Bonita and aren't that uncommon. I've seen large schools of them about the size you suggest out at Stragglers whilst Spearfishing. They tend to follow bait balls of fingerling sizes bait fish.

there were probably lots more that you didn't see. The school I saw had thousands of fish in it. You won't find Yellowfin Tuna in around close to the beaches in Perth. They prefer deeper water along the drop offs.

Cheers mate,

KH

I once had a small stingray jump out of the water and bellyflop back in when i was doing the KS epic downwinder in 2009. It was right under my kite, i think the shadow spooked it.

Spooked me anyway...

Hey KH,

I'm not allowed to go to the drop off - but I might have seen one here..

Yeh it may have been a Mack but it was shorter and stubbier lookin spesh in the tail. Rhoght i saw a flash of yellow on the underside/tail but was probably scale defraction/reflection?

I was only about 50-70m off shore when it jumped as I had literally just launched and on my way out. Was pretty funny at the time and had me thinking about how odd/fun/unknown/awesome the big blue and wind etc are. Has been a while since I just kicked back and took stock of the fact that a mere bit of thermal action and puff or two of wind, combined with my reshaped camping tent and maccas tray has me scootin along havin fun. Cool. Was making sure not to leave my Maccas tray behind for the 1st half of the run tho!

The only time I have ever seen Toona jump was around Denham/Shark Bay with a massive (around 10m diameter) bait ball of anchovies right along side the (small 4m)boat and toona, trevally, bull nose whalers (2.5m) on an all-you-can-eat binge. Went on for about an hour until there was nuttin but sparkles left of the choves and lots of very full lookin fish. Shoulda seen the toonas and trevelleys spewing up handfulls of choves when they were hauled on board. Pretty kn amazing - spesh for a non-fisho such as I.

Would have liked to have seen the school you described running. Wouldn't wanna be in the way with those pointy noses tho!

Yep - Doc I've copped a few gulls through the lines (unintentionally) in the past. Felt a bit bad for a few secs but seagulls are hard to love really.
