Hey Kiters,

Just wanting to throw this one out there, I'm finally at a point where I want to start trying a rotation - let's just start with a back roll. What I can't seem to work out is where the rotation starts from, i.e. do you load up your edge and start the spin from your leap off the water or do you start with your shoulders or is it both or something different all together?!
Any tips of way's of practising off the water?

Anyway thought this could be a thread to capture tips for tricks other ppl are wanting to try also but can't work out where to begin!

Thanks dudes and dudettes..

KeepKiting.

Depends if you want to send the kite or not. I do mine without sending the kite, so I rely on board pop to get myself started.

1. Park the kite relatively high to start with (as you get better, you can have it parked lower).
2. Make sure you've got enough power to comfortably pop/ollie the board off the water. If not, you'll struggle to get all the way around.
3. Load up your edge and quickly carve the board upwind, as if you were going to ollie off the water.
4. Instead of releasing the load and letting yourself get pulled up/forwards (into an ollie), keep carving and then let the board pop spin you around.
5. Throw your shoulder into it if you need more rotational power to get you around.

Try getting upside down (board above your head) as you go around. Feels great

If you have to send the kite to do a backroll, you're doing something wrong.

single roll, forwards or backwards, can be done with speed, timing and a good ollie. No kite intervention required until you ramp it up with a kiteloop, doublespin etc

You can send the kite if you like, but you don't have to for back rolls, or front rolls for that matter. All you need is to be sufficiently powered and be able to pop the board well enough.

Sending the kite results in a higher, dangle type roll. Parking the kite and using board pop results in more of a 'wake-style' roll.

Hey Mr.Bonk, thanks for the info, great help, wasn't sure about sending it or not as some of the footage I have seen shows next to no kite movement in the rolls. I mean sure make it huge and send it big, but I may just start little... Just needed an idea on how to start that rotation! All I need now is some freakin wind!

No sweat

When you start trying front rolls, they're easier if you send the kite to begin with. Then as you gradually get your timing right, you can just park the kite and pop the board, same as with backs. The key with doing fronts without sending the kite is to really throw your body into it.

Next step is both unhooked. It's a lot easier than you'd think

MMMmm.... unhooked yes will have to play with that idea too... guess leading on to that would be where I have to start getting used to putting the hands in the centre of the bar for that eh... would I also have trim the kite a little for the right amount of power when unhooked?

I put my hands right to the centre of the bar for any rotational move. Helps you avoid any excessive bar movement, particularly when you start taking one hand off the bar to do grabs with those moves. Getting used to taking one hand off the bar also gets you in the right position to start back rolls to toeside etc, where you need to land one-handed.

How much you trim your kite depends on how much power you've got to begin with. If you're already lit, you might want to trim it down a bit so you're not way overpowered when you unhook. What you don't want though is for your kite to stall when you unhook, so you at least have to trim it down until it doesn't do that.

I guess the next logical step after you get your rolls sorted is to start using them in transitions. A good smooth front roll transition with a grab certainly looks a lot more interesting than just switching the board and going the other way

for the back flip just remember to get the rotation going by looking back over your leading sholder (after you have loaded your pop), thats how i throw them anyway . good luck bro

The biggest problem I had when I started doing back rolls by sending the kite was that I would send the kite then do the back roll without ever sending the kite back the other way. Made for some messed up kite loop face plant dramas. I corrected it by placeing both hands on the opposite end of the bar than the end used to initially send the kite. Sorry if that sounds confusing but it worked. Mr bonk is right though no need to send the kite to do back rolls it is also easy to do off a wave cause it works like a ramp. Learn em both and be prepared to eat sh1t best way to learn.

Hi Bodiddly I just started doing back rolls myself I dont send the kite to do them but i do belive if you have the kite in a high position it helps and allso I use waves for that extra bit of lift if you do send the kite I belive it is called a back loop not a back roll.
