Hello All.

1st post but it looks like it won't be my last!

I ventured out to Kurnell today as a spectator. Absolutely amazing kite surfers out there today. It seemed everyone was 'grouped' together, like a big family (bbq and all). Maybe about 30 people in all. Anyway, just wondering if this is some kind of association or are kite surfers in general just a friendly bunch of helpfull people?

While I'm at it, I haven't seen any 'monkey kites' out there, or talked about in the forum. Does anyone have an opinion on the monkey kite brand? I've used them on the beach and found them amazingly stable and powerful, but never seen them used by anyone else?

Basically I am new at this (haven't been on the water yet) , and am concerned if it's going to be difficult to do this without a friend with me to help.

Hey one more thing while Im here, I saw a guy today land his kite by himself and pull on one of the lines (maybe a break line?). The kite landed very softly and turned directly into the wind. (very strong wind) I've just never seen anyone else do this? Seems maybe I don't need to have someone waiting for me all the time for when I need to land the kite?

Ok sorry about all the questions in the one post!

Happy kiting!
Damon

I believe what you saw was the Gaastra demo day at Kurnell.

Sure would be nice though if it was always like a big family with BBQ and all .

Get some lessons...., even if you feel confident on a kite. Lessons will teach you to be a safe kiter as well as teach you how to save yourself if it all goes to **. Safe kiting is what it's all about. We all want to kite the same beaches together and not be thrown of because someone's launched themselves through grandma's 80th birthday picnic...

As Victor says it was the Gastra/Longreef demo day. I wish there was a BBQ everytime you got off the water.

I've never seen any Monkey kites in Quibro bay or Kurnell. I've only ever seen them at Boat Harbour in a Southerly. Don't know where they any other times (probably North shore?).

As for the neat landing trick be very careful how you do this with a 4 line kite. It's not for beginners and certainly not for beginners in high winds. At your stage do not venture on the water alone or without an experienced Launching/landing buddy. Quibro is not as simple as it looks, if you drop the kite in the channel the next stop is the airport. You can learn to body drag in a gentle southerly but don't go beyond the point. As Dark Side says if you are alone drop the kite behind the trees but watch how the others do it first.

Get some lessons without doubt and then talk to everyone about the gear you need. My opinion for beginners is get some good second hand stuff there's so much of it around.

Hey Damon, once you've had lessons and have you're gear you'll find that most experienced kiters on the beach are more than happy to offer a helping hand or advise if you ask.....after all everyone's been a newbie (or still are in my case!!) and when you're still unsure of certain things then ask as it's better to be safe than sorry. Anyone who doesn't help or makes a joke out of you for asking isn't worth knowing.

As for places to have lessons, it's a matter of going and having a chat to the schools to see which one you'd prefer. If you're after a social scene then give Balmoral Boards a call on the North Shore, they have a wed eve where you can fly trainer kites, meet others plus there's beer and bbq afterwards!!

Hey MonkeyKiter, I have a MonkeyKite I will sell for $250.
It is a 04 15m and has no holes or repairs. I am using it from about 13 to 22 knots and am 85k. I am looking to buy the new 05 version and would like to get something for the old kite as I am starting to get a collection of old kites ( I also have a Rhino1 16m and a 03 monkey 11m that I dont use at all)

I hesitate selling a kite to someone if they are not prepared to get lessons. Make sure you are properly trained before putting your kite up. Just the other day I had to save a guy from himself as he was trying to lauch a kite that
1. was barley pumped up, limp like you would not belive.
2. Did not know how to attach the lines using the Camalheads, just placed the loop over knot on the kite pigtail and hoped it would stay on.
3. was trying to self-launch by placing sand on inside of wingtip instead of folding over tip and then placing sand.

If you are interested, leave a message at 02 9904 7210

Cheers, Tony

Hey Damon, glad you enjoyed the day. I hope everyone else had a good day out there too. It was good to see Davey Blair and Frank Rosin going nuts out there. Did you stick around for the slider? We put a rail in the water in the afternoon and Davey was hitting it like a madman. I'm afraid to say that alot of people missed Frank absolutely killing it with some insanely powered kiteloops getting well above the kite in the afternoon, great to watch but some of the beatings he took sort of turns you off the idea of powering yourself towards the water from 30ft up. Anyway, I'm pretty keen to get this sort of thing going as a more regular thing, but I'll have to have a chat to the local guys before doing anything without everyones input.
Anyway, thanks for the post about the day. I'll pass it on to my parents who were the real workers behind the day, I'm sure they'll be stoked that there were a few people who enjoyed themselves after all their hard work. See ya!!

PS. I'd also like to thank everyone else who gave a hand on the day, especially Mick who spent half the day cooking the BBQ for everyone. Cheers Mickey!!

Not only did Mick cook but he ate that much he did't need any tea,
But seriously Jeff Thanks for a great afternoon it was good to see that Gastra may have finally turned the corner and have a good Kite with the new vision.

It was also so good to see two of our own home grown boys in you and Adian hold your own with a couple of team riders'

Not to froget Mick who I believe ripped on his nine.
Way to go team rider.

Thanks all for your replies.

I just got back from Noumea and they are kite crazy over there. (good temperature too!)

Well from what i've read so far it seems easy enough to find others to kite board with. My only hesitation so far about the whole sport is having no one to do it with, or just getting in peoples way.

I reckon more kite boarding events in Sydney would be an exellent way to not only promote the sport but help build a community of kite boarders.

Anyway, thats my 2 cents.

oh..and I assure you all I will be having plenty of lessons.

Cheers,
Damon
