Hey - I have done a search to see what threads there are on best company(s) to use for travel insurance and came up dry ! I would have thought this topic has been done to death !!
Im heading over to Mauritius mid year and need to organise travel insurance - who's used what companies and any recommendations?

We use 1 cover now - aami would not pay for flights or accomodation losses when air nz cancelled flights at last minute due to Auckland fuel line being dug up back in 2017

Speak to KA , the BKSA used to include worldwide insurance in their membership, might work out cheaper joining KA if it includes this , plus you'll have 12 mth cover on return

I would call Covermore, ask if they cover what you need and if so i would go with them. I was told by friends in the travel industry they are one of the best and i found them excellent when i had to make a claim a few years back.

+1 for 1 cover.
Used recently, didn't need to claim but the PDS and price checked out ok in comparison with others.

Again, try Covermore. As i said, they came recomended from people i trust and I didn't have any problems with my claim. Due to a medical issue (temporary paralasys in my leg) i had to get my sorry arse out of a fairly remote part of the Papua New Guinean jungle an hour before sunset. On a Sunday, via helicopter.

I was then taken to an after hours hospital and shared a waiting room with 2 blokes with bad machete wounds. They couldn't do SFA and charged me like $8aud or something so Covermore discussed an immediate care flight home (huge costs involved) but in the end we just changed my flight back to Brisbane and the helpful bloke i was dealing with pretty much sorted the dr's, hotels, flight back to Perth himself so i only had about $100 in out of pocket expenses.

Not too bad at all i don't think?

Hi All,
As Lambie mentioned 1cover now state that they do not cover Kitesurfing in their current policy statement and I also got this confirmed with an email from them today.
I not sure when that changed as they did cover it when I used them in august last year for a kitesurf trip (didn't have to claim for anything but I had them confirm in email before that trip that it was def covered).

I'm hunting around now for cover for a Kite trip to the Islands (ex NZ) so if anyone has any good word on any travel insurance company they have actually had to recently claim for kiting incident let it be known, otherwise it looks like covermore is my best bet this round to ensure kite cover.

Cheers,

Good to hear you were covered!
As of Sept11 2018 southern cross seem to have now lumped us kiters in with microlights, basejumping and rodeo etc under exclusions section "E29(j)"...
Were you "windsurfing"

The insurance that comes with both our credit cards, AMEX and Westpac, now exclude car hire excess when hiring overseas, only covered in Oz. Clamping down on everything.

Try 'travel insurance direct' - they specifically cover kiting related medical and some equipment transit claims. Contact them for written clarification before buying the policy if in doubt.

PSA: Sri Lanka is currently listed by DFAT as 'Reconsider your need for travel'

Most travel insurance companies do not cover you while in these countries, but here is a list of those that do:

Anyone else braving it to SL this year?

Thanks Lambie, just noticed this, I'm off next week.

I took out 1cover in Feb for July- August trip, kitesurfing was covered in "activities" in Feb but now not on new policies, I rang them and they have confirmed kitesurfing cover because my policy was issued in Feb, sent me confirmation email.

But as of now 1cover does not include kitesurfing or scooters under 50cc.

While waiting for confirmation I found out the following who do cover kite surfing and a quote for 1 month in Indo, virgin best price.

TID $165

Covermore $162

Insure4less $124

Virgin $112 not specified as kitesurfing but it is included in "surface watersports" in PDS, I rang to check, you'd hope so seeing Branson is a kiter

I wouldn't insure half the clueless warriors I see on the water even locally let alone over seas.

You know... Thats exactly who i should be talking to.

Not you "people"

But the insurance agencys. They can tell me if experienced kiters die or not or if its just the self taught copiers.

I feel like joining clubs and memberships is an intermediate thing. After a few seasons you realise you dont need insurance. But beginners dont have any.. so theres still a bit of a decision to make between if old mate in the tree is a begginer or profesional

It's not just about kiting and getting injured, you need travel insurance for any medical emergency, so may as well make sure kiting is covered, look at all the muppets getting injured overseas then trying to get other people to pick up the $100,000 plus medivac tab by crowd funding just because they were too lazy to spend $100 bucks or so on travel insurance.

Ive been travelling o/s for specifically to kite for over 10 years and luckily only had one claim due to pesky volcanoes disrupting travel plans and a damaged board claim.

Just not worth travelling without it.

I have to agree. When i had my claim i was told a medivac would be around $125k if i needed that however my claim only cost approx 18k but that was because i was able to get medical treatment in QLD and WA. 18k isn't so bad but like you said 100k+ is a lot of money.

Would you believe that was the 1st time i used travel insurance? I'd travelled a lot, hell i even drove a slow race car around the worlds most insane racetrack in under 10 minutes during a supercar weekend and never once even thought about what could happen

Covermore & World Nomads currently cover kitesurfing but a lot of others exclude it. I use the Covermore annual multitrip policy but get confirmation each year that it's still covered.
If your gear is new, check the maximums for sports equipment- you might need to buy extra cover. Some household insurance policies cover loss of sports equipment overseas so might not need it.

We've been using World Nomads for years now for all our travels. I recommend them.
They cover for kitesurfing, which was handy in Zanzibar and Mauritius.
We had to use our insurance for an emergency root canal in Russia. They provided assistance and paid for the treatment.
