it will go through oversize baggage . so it might mean you get out of the airport quicker than normal baggage or you could be waiting ****ing ages . either way you can't check it in via normal checkin , they will allocate your seat and then go tell you to go round the corner and drop your bags

Just make sure your gear is under the maximum weight limit or you will be in for a very unpleasant surprise.

A bag that splits in half wins favrour at the check in counter. I've traveled with over 30kgs of kite gear but since the bag splits into 2 15kg bags I get away with it. At the end of the day, if it's over 30kgs, the baggage gorilla union won't allow it on.

My bag is 140cms long and technically that's under their oversize limits. Most of the time they will insist on dropping it at oversized but I prefer that anyway. Then it doesn't end up falling off a baggage carosel somewhere.

wow 10 seconds to input www.qantas.com/au/en.html go to help>FAQ>heavy bags and this is the result

Question
What is a heavy bag?
Answer
Bags above a certain weight are considered a 'Heavy Bag' and will need a 'Heavy Bag' tag. This is automatically dispensed from the Bag Drop monitor at Perth airport, and you'll be asked to attach it to your bag. If your bags weigh 32kgs or over, you'll be asked to re-pack to reduce the weight.

robbo you must have been ****tons over the limit

Airport Excess Baggage Charges (AUD) - For travel before 1 June 2011
Destination Ticketed in Weight Ticketed in Piece
Australia Domestic (including QantasLink)+ $10 per extra kg $22 per extra piece
International - Australia to/from New Zealand $10 per extra kg $22 per extra piece
International - Australia to/from Asia $35 per extra kg $150 per extra piece
International - Australia to/from Europe and Africa $50 per extra kg $150 per extra piece
International - to/from The Americas^ N/A $150 per extra piece
$50 heavy charge for each piece weighing over 23kg~

Having to drop 'oversized items' at the baggage counter is different than not complying to the limits of 32kg weight and Total dimensions 140cm Width+Height+Depth for each item. These limits are different for Stateside / Int'l flights and have also fallen for 1 June onwards! They will not carry these full stop.

[Excess number or pieces or weight to your allowance incurs the charge, of course, and whether they do charge it or not may be discretionary. NB: 23kg for economy. And no, I don't work for Qantas, I checked this out last time I flew in Feb.]

www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/checked-baggage/global/en

ANSWER to OP: Yes, I think you will have a prob but I would call Qantas (and get a reference if they ok it).

If you're over the allowance, you can purchase additional baggage allowance (allowance varies with class of travel and destination) on the manage your booking page; which is much cheaper than at the airport. (Max height is 277 cm, max weight of a single item 32kg)
www.qantas.com/au/en/manage-booking.html
Many other airlines around the world now charge per surfboard, even if they are packed together. It pays big time to travel as lightly as possible.

ok, i fly a lot. as of 1 july qantas are changing their policy from 23kgs any number of bags to 1 bag total 23 kgs. anything over $10 kilo. no discretion any longer / requires a team leader to sign off - software waont let them pass it through. this is because they have had so much lost revenue in the past.
they are beginnig to enforce it now allthough because i am a FF they still sometimess pass it through particulary if it is the team leader and I am nice to them.

But I think you are still entitled to also take golf clubs or bike or pram etc (I dont know as I dont carry these items) so my advice would be find out what extra you can take and then call it that when you check in (this big bag - they're my golf clubs)

things will really begin to sting after july with 1 bag to 23kgs but you can always ask them for some of their qantas baggage tape and tape everything together and say it's one bag!

The thing is who can pack all their crap together at 23kgs? When I flew to Thailand I used my carry on as my clothes bag and packed my wakeboard and wakeskate along with vest, helmet and shoes in another bag which came to exactly 23kgs... Good luck fitting kites bars and harnesses as well, especially if you need to bring 3 or 4 kites.

You should see how much crap those course racing gooses bring to an event, I would be suprised if they have any prize money left if they win the thing.

If you are going to be over the weight limit on Qantas, I suggest that you pre-pay for the excess in advance on-line, as it's much cheaper than at the airport!

On a recent international flight on Qantas, I weighed my gear at home, pre-paid my excess on-line, and apparently my scales were out, because when they weighed my gear at the airport, I was 3 kgs over what I had paid for, and the bastards still charged me for the additional 3 Kilos!
Even when you try to do the right thing, they still screw you. [}:)]
Qantas only get my business if I have absolutely no other choice!

thats because you were flying out of a north american location.

it is standard if you fly into, or out of a north american destination as long haul, you receive a 64kg baggage limit.

basically you were charged $120 for your 16kg excess baggage.
