Last weekend I got my ass KICKED completely by this kite. It would frequently fold over itself and drop outof the sky, sometimes fly backwards, sometimes absolutely impossible to relaunch, and other times would not turn.... Ok sure, so the wind was pretty light, i think around 12knots (it's a 13m kite) But I had flown it in a previous session quite fine in wind like that, I just don't know what pigtail/trim settings I had, as my friend did it up for me.

I have been looking all over the net, trying to learn which knots i should attach my lines to, eg, 1st knot, 2nd knot, or 3rd not.... and if both the front and back lines have to be on the same combination of knots... ie, 2nd/2nd, or can I do 1st/3rd ?? And would this be advisable...

Basically i would like to know, what difference will it make to the kite, depending on which pigtail knots i attach it to... And how does it all relate to the trim loop/depower strap??

When i was getting my ass kicked last weekend, i had my front lines attached to the 1st knot (the knot furthest from the kite) and my rear lines attached to the 3rd knot (the knot closest to the kite) and my depower strap/trim loop was on "full power" (ie, making the front lines as long as possible). The reason i did this, is because i felt the backlines are always quite loose making it hard to turn??, i'm not sure if i'm mistaken though. Anyone had some experience with this kite??

All help on tuning/rigging this kite would be Greatly appreciated... THANKS all!

Dookz You are ovepowering your kite!. The fuels do not like to fly like this and if they are flown like this in light winds , they do all kinds of weird things.

Set the lines even and make sure the bladders are pumped up real hard.

I had a scary suspision it was oversheeted.... but i wasn't sure if it was "flying" backwards or "falling" backwards.. Lol, i didn't think it was oversheeted cause the back lines look loose, sometimes so loose its hard to turn the damn thing.
And by 'set your lines even', do you mean to put them on the same knots? so i guess 2nd knot/2nd knot would be a good bet then..?

Try attaching the front lines to just the 1st knot (furthest from the kite) & the rear lines the same (on the first knot, furthest from the kite) You want the lines to be attached to the kite as even as possible.

Then launch the kite, while it's in the air you need to now adjust your trim loop & stopper ball settings. What i do is...
Have the kite fairly depowered using the trim loop depower strap. (but not fully depowered, say 3/4 depowered)
Then keep the kite flying between 11 & 1 o'clock so that it doesn't fly over my head and fall out of the sky. (its depowered so you should not get pulled or lofted unless its too windy/gusty, but go into the water to be safe)
Loosen the top stopper ball, then pull down the bar until you see that the back lines have minimal, but just a little bit of slack in them. move the stopper ball down to where your holding the bar and tighten it up. This will give you less movement (power/depower) when your holding onto the bar. So now your more relying on the trim loop power/depower strap to depower or power up the kite. Hop on your board & power it up using the trim loop by letting it all the way out. Go for a run & see how you go....

If you need less power when your going along then you just pull on the depower strap till you find the right setting.

When you need a lot more or less power then the above you can adjust the stopper ball setting again. Or, bring the kite down & adjust the pigtail settings on the kite where the lines are attached so you have the back lines a bit shorter or longer. If you need to adjust the pigtail settings you genarally dont get much more power/depower & you normally need to go up or down in kite size for the conditions that your out in.

The stronger the wind is the less you will need to bring down the stopper ball so you have more depower available. The lighter the wind the more you need to power it up. But don't over power it too much or the kite will be sheeted out and it will fly backwards and do all the weird things you've already experienced. Try flying the kite more aggressively instead.

Always depower and undo your stopper ball when you come in to land the kite so that you minimise the risk of being dragged or lofted by the kite.
Hope that helps

2nd knot, 2nd knot should be fine, provided you havent adjusted the factory set bar and lines. you should be at full power with bar pulled right against the bottom stopper ball then. I think your back lines are slack, perhaps because you are riding in light conditions, or you are not pulling the bar in enough to power the kite. if you wish to set the kite up like you have been, your optimal power point will be with the bar further away from you. This is fine , but remember to adjust the bottom stopper ball up the chicken loop rope by the same distance or you will continue to oversheet.

Yes, from what you guys have been telling me, I realy should be having straighter lines than what i am getting. It must be because of the light conditions i've taken it out in so far.
It was becoming plain rediculous at one stage; 1st knot front lines, 3rd knot back lines, trim loop on full power, bar pulled all the way back, and still swaying like a bitch... It's a brand new kite, and i haven't changed any of the factory settings on the bar/lines etc, so i guess it must be none other than the conditions. Alright well i'll give an update on this after this coming weekend, should be some higher winds in store.
Thanks for all your help, i'm slightly less confused now

hey i just checked that out, it didn't provide much information on the knot set up though, just the Custom Fuel Injection settins, which is different.

But one thing I'd realy like to know is:
Does the kite turn faster with the bar sheeted out a bit more? or Sheeted in?? the problem with it being sheeted out is that the back lines are a bit more slack, so wouldn't that make it slower?
So far i am getting the impression that apparantly it doesn't...?

The kite will turn the at the same speed but the bar pressure will be different. This means when its depowered you will have to pull more on the bar to turn it. When powered up you will have to pull less.

Don't know if I agree with you PsYLoR... I have found when slightly depowered (ie. not flared) the kite flies and turns faster.. more foward movement.. as opposed to being over sheeted and wanting to fly backwards and collapse and generally give you the ****s . I fly fuels and love them (04 models) but they can be a pain in low winds and find they are better off on the front lines and flown more aggresively in low winds.

On the knot setting I have always just kept them even (middle knot) the rest can be adjusted easily on the trim, if using the bar that came with the kite. If you use the same bar for all your kites then you may need to play with the knot settings... I found this out the hard way too..

Hope the wind comes back soon!!

Yeah kk if the kite is way over sheeted or fully flared you will loose performance, infact the kite will fly really bad. But if its tuned correctly when powered right up the kite will still turn as fast as when its depowered. However when its depowered you just need to pull harder on the bar to take up the slack in the back lines.

Hey again, ok well i went out this weekend in 16-22 knot wind (at one point gusting to 29, but i don't think i was on the water at that point)
And i noticed that this time by back lines were tighter than before, so the kite felt much more responsive and it was all good... but one thing i noticed is that another fellow rider had a SS Fuel 04' 15m, and after watching him for a while i realised he never did pull his bar down, he'd always keep it completely sheeted out, and only adjust the power from his trim strap, and when his trim strap was on full power, there would be no slack in his back lines at all (even though bar was foreward). Now when i try to do this (i set the knots even 2nd/2nd) even if my trim strap is on full power, there is still slack in my back lines, hence if i pull on trim strap to reduce power, the slack just becomes so large i can't steer kite.. This isn't too much of a problem for me, because at the moment my rig is set up pretty much perfectly for the lines to have tension just as the bar is sheeted in, but my trim strap always has to be on full power.
I am getting a suspicion the shop i bought the kite from might have tampered with the lines??? I haven't seen other SS kites with dangly lines, but maybe itsjust a perspective issue....

Dookz... Are you using the outermost pigtails?

Are you using the stopper balls?
Give someone who rides a Fuel a go of yours and get them to tell you how they would set it up next time your out kiting.

I am using outermost pigtails (number 1 and Z)
Currently setting the knots even...

I've placed the lowest stopper ball as far as i can down, and the top stopper ball about 5cm down from depower cleat.

I think i will need to give it to another SS fuel rider for him to give me an impression
