Hello,

I'm 78 kg, 1.56m x 0.38 m board. I ve been flying a foil (Flysurfer) 7.5 m since last December.

I heard and read several times that LEI turn faster than than foils. Typically, it seems that LEI kiters of my weight use 11-12 m kite when i am out. Can we say that a 11-12 m LEI kite turns faster than a 7.5 m Flysurfer?

I have never flown a LEI. Can someone who has tried both satisfy my ciuriosity?

Thanks.
Just curious.

Without starting a new argument about which style is better, wait until the sea breeze is back, and go to your local shop and demo a LEI so you can make up your own mind.

Having said that, the smaller the kite, the faster it turns. The higher the aspect ratio ditto. Overall size of a rammed air kite is smaller for the same power.

But it also depends on how aggressively you fly.

I started LEI, went foil, then back to LEI when 4 string came in. Now that foils are improved, I wouldn't mind having one just for the variety.

Hey fver,

I think you'll find that the turn rate isn't too disimilar between equivalent sized kites ie a 9m FS should be pretty similar in power and turn speed to around a 15m LEI.

It all depends on the kite design, bar length, rider experience and individual setup. A pulley bar will turn an LEI a bit faster than a normal bar of same length and I think it will totally depend upon how powered you are and the size of the kite.

I seem to remember Ian Youngs kite doing some of the fastest kiteloops of any kite at the nats and he was using his trusty green 5m Maniac??? But then again the Slingsh#t crew using 5.5m LEI's were uncontrollably fast too!

Just fly both and make up your own mind, as Gasman says, go to a reputable shop and they should let you demo an LEI and then you'll know without a shadow of a doubt what turns fastest FOR YOU!

Good winds, not like the current NorWesters

It's not just foil vs LEI. The WAC (Wind Attack Control) FlySurfer kites like the XTC & Psycho2 do not turn as fast as the pressureless bar kites like the Maniacs and Warriors - especially at the bottom end of their wind ranges.

Doesn't aspect ratio have a significant effect on apparent turning speed? Don't higher aspect kites, regardless of type, carry more forward speed and therefore have a slower apparent turn rate? Isn't this the reason that the new style (kiteloopers) are mid aspect because they turn on the spot they carry less forward speed and therefore don't generate the pull of a high aspect kite and cream the rider?

G'day Fred
There are many things that make a kite turn fast, and I have flown many fast turning foils, especially smaller ones.
The inflatable sled design, which is what pump up kites are called, would be the fastest turning kite type on the market IMO, especially the newer moderate aspect ratio designs, like Best Yargas, Flexifoil Strike2, North Vegas, etc, etc.
You really need to fly some to see if that is what you want, I suspect it will be, most kiters appreciate fast turning, or maybe a better way to put that is tight turning, as in pivot turns?
It just means you can get the kite to wheere it needs to be a lot easier.

Cya and
