Looking for some help.

Yesterday was out trying a few things and put the kite in the water a few times. I landed well under the kite and it fell (and seem to roll on its descent). When I relaunched one back line was twisted on the inside of the front line. The other side seemed ok.

Looked at it for awhile and couldn't get my head around how to fix it while on the water. Kite seemed to fly ok (well enough to get back in). Was a bit gusty and direct onshore so pulled the pin and swam back.

Is this fixable while on the water?

Not sure if this is what everyone has been calling inverting.

Thanks in advance.

I have had this happen a few times, when the kite piches LE over TE while on the water, perhaps even with a roll in there too. Technically, there must be some way to get it out at the bar end, but I haven't taken the time to work it out yet. I have a 5th line system so it can get complicated. Unless you knew exactly which line to thread where, it might make things worse, and lessen your control.

My strategy with any sort of tangle has been to go straight back to the beach, pull the safety, land the kite, detach all the lines and then start again. Time consuming but safer in the long run I think.

This isn't the inverting that people have been talking about with the flat kites.

Hey Neoniphon and Matt,

Your approach is correct, return to the beach and set the kite down safe with sand. You can then pass the bar through the "V" of the centre lines which will remove the twists without having to remove the lines from the kite. even if you did have to remove the lines, it is only necessary to remove the back lines as the fronts cannot be screwed up once you straighten the back lines out.

I don't think it would be possible in the water as there is an almost guaranteed risk of the kite powering whilst you are amongst the lines. Just ride to the beach, the kite will fly nicely even with a double pitched roll through the lines.

If you cannot relaunch the kite, self rescue and deal with the mess on the safety of the sandy beach.

Darren,

thanks.

So by looking at the twist, can you see whether to pass the bar down through the center-line "V" or up through the V ?

Or do you just try it one way, and if it puts an extra twist in then you know it should be the reverse?

Right on the money again my friend. Just look at the twist to gain an idea of direction the bar must go thru the centre lines. Or if all else fails, like you said, if the first way increases twists, simply go the other direction.

Cheers,

the kite flies just fine with even a couple of these twists - kitehard has the right approach: get back to the beach, land your kite , and then deal with it

for all you bow riders who think your gear is so cool - can you make your new toys do that?!?!?!

I had the same problem on my CO2.
if you have a fith line your in problems. if so if would probably cut the 5-th line.
otherwise just launch your kite again and go on. its no problem to kite with twisted lines. but not too long.

Yes Galah,
When the Halo I was demoing hit the water, I gave it to much slack and it rolled over but then relaunched just fine. It flew perfectly well with the lines overlapped and I did not bother going in as it really did not affect the performance. Still not saying they are the kite to get but no problem when kite rolls over on itself.
