Could anyone please clarify the effects of rigging the back lines to the outer or inner set of pigtails on some C kites... Do the ones closer to the leading edge of the kite make the kite respond quicker on turning? Do they have any other effect - i.e. on power?

Thanks

G'day Lizo,

My Yargas (C kites) both have 2 pigtail connection points on the rear and the front.

The front ones make for a slightly fatter profile for getting a bit more bottom end on low wind days.

The rear ones do change the turning speed for sure. Mine are marked faster on the most rear (furthest from the LE) and slower (closest to the LE). They are only about 2 inches or so apart but make a noticeable differance. My 13m I have set to faster but my 9m I have left set at slower after a few very scary accidental kiteloops in the faster position!! Bl00dy 9m is too good/fast for me over 25kts in the faster setting.

If you are a newbie I'd say go for the slower setting until you feel solid and stable with your setup and then try out the faster settings later on. Don't try the faster setting on a day when your kite is at the top-end of it's wind range though...

Good luck

Thanks funky,

well i was talking about a 17m Fuel that i just bought. The other day it was very low wind (perhaps around 10-12 knots), and i just found it very slow on turning when rigged up to the rear most pigtails... then i tried rigging to the ones 2 inches closer to the LE, but i'm not sure if i noticed much difference. It was still a bit slow and not enough power... i think the wind then picked up a notch or two and then it was ok. But still, i'm not sure which setting made the kite turn/respond faster...

Yeh I reckon if the wind is low most kites (haven't flown Fuels) are like trying to do circle work in a double decker bus... My old 2003 15.5m Flow is ok for what it is (old, big and slow) but it is a put the indicators on and muscle the bugger (heavy back line stearing) into a turn. Better than sittin on the beach though

I would have thought you would get a slightly better response from your original (further back) connections. With a big boy like a 17m you are only ever going to be out in low-ish winds so stick to the rear connectors for my 2c.

I think it is a simple case of leverage... Hey i am a simple guy so even i can thunk that thru. The wider the points the more leverage... well that's my crackpot theory for the day.

Geez 10-12kts is frustrating!! Just enough to convince yourself that it is more like 13-15kts and get out there...

Luff~~~~DOH!! Luff~~~~DOH!! Luff~~~~DOH!!
Bugger pack it in... no wait it's picking up??

rear pig tails = faster, less bar pressure, more bar movement needed
leading edge side pig tails = slower turning, more bar pressure, a bit less movement needed
