Yesterday we were sitting around kind of bummed because there was no wind. It was blowing ENE around 10 knots which is a bit onshore at our beach. We were saying stuff like " its not a very good friday if the wind doesnt blow...."
Anyway at about 6.30pm it went around to the Ne and seemed to increase slightly. Me and me china went and rigged up. We knew it was too light for us but we wanted to muck around with the kites for something to do. Had a bit of a go and a body drag looping the kite etc, for about 15 mins. I had enough so I started to roll up my lines. Then a miracle happened.
I looked out at my friend and he was flying. The sun had set, but was still twilight, and the full moon was rising, and it was picking up! Re-rigged and out we went, did about half a dozen walks up the beach and heaps of runs. The wind kept getting better(there was a change quickly approaching) and it kept getting darker. I've paraglided at night before and its the same as paragliding in the day except you cant see, so its fairly stupid(and illegal in Oz) but this was different. VMC was excellent, and the moonlight made it surreal as we tore in and out laughing our heads of and hooting at each other at the fact we were actually full moon kiting and it was good.
We ended up getting a good hour in then drank beer as we watched the lightening show of the approaching change. So FUN.
PS From a previous thread about sanding sharp rails, my board went noticebly better with sanded rails, less skatey, more smooth feeling.
Stoked and its 20-25 S today.

your chance of getting eaten by a shark increases by about 600000000000% during sunset, so be carefull.

Denham at the moment is perfect for night kiting, full moon low tide so the biteys stay offshore and the wind usually picks up by 9-10 pm. Done it twice now and its a total spinout. A few more crew might make it intersting!!!

you said it is illegal, do you mean it is illegal to kitesurf after sunset?

No it's illegal to be on the water without nav lights!. Imagine what the kite would look like all lit up . Where would you put the starboard/port lights. Would end up looking like a christmas tree

Yes Greg
Unfortunately night kiting became illegal in all Australian coastal waters when the national maritime authority classified the 'kiteboard' as a 'watercraft' and 'power kites' as 'propulsion mechanisms' (see appendix 27/9 sections 3a & 4a of the 1992 amendment).
Because of this decision the provisions which therefore make kiting illegal afterdark are those sections of the legislation which relate to lighting - vis-a-vis :
"regulation standard illumination is required to be displayed by all watercraft operated in coastal waters between the hours of sunset & sunrise".
But then - if you read further the regulations for "crafts of less than 3 metre length ...... operating within 1500M of the shoreline" (presumably that covers kiteboarders) only require "a central white light of sufficient intensity so as to illuminate the whole of the craft & any associated rigging".
So Greg,
Given all of that I reckon if you were to wear a waterproofed miners helmet with the light pointing upwards and you bleached your lines sparkling reflective white then you would probably get away with it.

And Greg
I would never have worked that out if you hadnt asked
Good question son - mark up another non stupid post to Cliffor123

hmmmmmm...

a few ultra-bright LED's and some lithium button cells would sufficiently light up a kite, and only add about 20 grams if they were made waterproof...

lightsticks on the back of the pilot would light him up without causing night blindness...

a lightstick on the board handle would help it stay visible...

and lazer pointers on your leader lines could trace out some wacky patterns on the underside of the kite...

WOW... sounds like a Floyd concert
