Hi all - I'm off to Mui Ne in Vietnam in May. Should still be a fair bit of wind then. While I'm there, my girlfriend is keen to learn to kite as there seems to be quite a few kite schools. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of them - any particular one we should look at?

Thanks for any help!

Cheeeeeers!

Hey Matt,
I might see you there in May, as far as wind, just keep other options in mind...hopefully the wind gods come through. Have been watching the graphs for the last few weeks, seems like this season is quite mixed up. Jibes is good for teaching, big, good facilities etc etc, so are a lot of others. Haven't heard great things about the Russian schools though...I believe there is a aussie run school now...if you want to stay patriotic.
Don't stay to far from the middle of the strip, you will spend most of your time on a moto.

See you there

Hey Matt

This link is to a kiteschool that was set up at Mui Ne by an Aussie.
I spent a week there in Jan 06. Very helpful Guy and his website has some infomation on the area. Jibes seemed to be a well run school as well.

No one seemed to have good things to say about the Russian schools.

I also agree with Cabron. Try and pick accomodation somewhere in the middle, the beach is a lot longer than you think.

would you guys mind letting me know what it's like as I'm going to Vietnam in October so if there's a chance of wind and a kite then I'll haul my gear over there at the risk of frustrating my travel friend who doesn't kite!!
Thanks!

Speak to Richard at our local beach, he just spent 2 weeks in Mui Ne and had nothing but good things to say about the place. He went in Dec I believe.

Apparently, there is a large contingency of Russian Mafia staying there due to Vietnam's communism links.

All in all I understand it is VERY cheap

Hey Hurrah, are you talking about Rich S or another Richard I don't know of? Which beach do I need to go hang out at haha!

Can't wait am sooooo excited, so many trips planned for this year...I've made finding the kiting mojo into a holiday extravaganza!!!

Hey MH, when I find Rich and get some info I'll mail you. Maybe also see if the area has a weather history ie wind etc over the past year and see how it looks in May. You'll certainly be warmer than me as I'll be in the cold of Tassie kiting brrrrr!

Have a fab weekend

Caleah,
Not taking your kite to Vietnam would surely do damage to your kiteing Mojo....will speak with you at wednesdays committee meeting.

I took some people to Mui Ne in June two years ago. It was prety good. Im not sure if we were lucky with the wind or if it was allways good at that time of year. We were there for 11 days and probaly averaged 3 hours of wind out of 7 days. Sometimes the wind would come before rain squall, or after, sometimes all day... it was really strange. But it was windy! The sea that you kite in is like Port philip bay (if you know it) ..bumpy with small wind waves (not the easiest for beginners) but there are some awesome people at airwaves (the Aussie one) and the "beachboys' do everything for you, right down to rigging your kite. if you end up down wind they come and get you....sweet!
We were staying in the hotel associated with airwaves and it was beautiful. only about $40/night, expensive for vietnam but cheap for us, pool, aircon, great service etc...
Bottom line, its pretty good. if there isnt any wind theres plenty to do and the people are really nice.

good luck.
