G'day,

Can you recommend a place I can camp with the family (wife, 2 x 12 year olds), that also has a kiting beach not too far away (up to 30 minutes drive). Camp toilet and water supply a bonus. If possible near a flatwater river for canoe/kayaking, or anything else I can do with the fam.

I don't want a caravan park, just a camp ground, preferably within 30 minutes of a town for supplies also.

All recommendations welcome!

Augusta sounds ideal for your needs. There is a camp ground across the road from the rigging area. Perfect flat water location, you ride on the river, downwind of the beach, so the water is glassy flat. If you want to ride waves head out through the river mouth to the beach.

You can canoe up and down the river as well. And it's not too far from Margaret River as well, plus bushwalks etc.

Coral Bay is good if you like camping in a caravan park or Cape Range National Park is far more remote but still accessible to 2wd and all camp grounds have toilets. You will need to bring your own water though. Kiting wise Sandy Bay is better than anywhere near coral bay and you can kite around the point to your camp site at Osprey Bay. You also have all inside the reef for the canoe or you can paddle up Yardie Creek. It also has some the best snorkelling off the beach you will see.

Horrocks Beach 70k's north of Gero. Camp in the caravan park, 30 seconds walk to the beach, lagoon and great surf. Fish and chips from the general store, playground for the kids, and a jetty to fish off. Bowes river 10 minutes drive for canoeing under the gum trees and birdlife.
Northampton and Gero close by if you want to go out somewhere.

augusta is pretty good. Turners Caravan park has everything you want and its a 5 minuet walk from the beach. and it usually has pretty sick winds.

not wrong there one of the best spots ive kited, free camp just north of town past the golf course, dongara is also a great spot ,coranations, port gregory, denham, were pretty spoilt up here, have a fat time

Up North is great but if the misses is not a hardy soul the heat and WIND (yes WIND ) that on the coast Coral bay to Exmouth sometimes just does not stop . SSW /S/SSE > 25 knots as it moves through the day and into the night. Great kiting but hard core camping. If you camp , a camp site that lets you get in the lee of some shelter (sand dunes etcis a must. FOod blows off tables (tables n blow over and it feels like someone is bashing on your tent with a lump of wood all night.

Kiters and sailors love it , lesser folks dont. If you want the balance then the Gero / horrocks area might be a bit more family friendly.

Indeed, I've been looking at the charts everyday in the lead up to the upcoming trip.

Go to the national park in Exmouth.
Camp further down the cape in the el cheapo spots by Yardie creek

I'm now planning a trip to Augusta for 2 weeks from now. I like to camp more away from people than at caravan parks, where I can light a fire freely and there's no car headlights coming and going. So I'm looking at Point Road or Conto campground over on the west. No idea what the coast is like there, but theres a beach, so I'll take the TT, Sector 60, and the 9m & 12 m and if I get out one or two days I'll be stoked. Can always just drive down to that recommended place in the river mouth at Augusta if I get toey.

Hey man I have to be honest, and crew correct me if I'm wrong, but your timeline might be a bit out. Augusta in two weeks time, mmmmm to early in the season me thinks. And about ex mouth what VB man said.

True, and thats ok, if I get one day in while I'm away that makes me happy!
