Hi Everyone,

Great to see the enthusiasm from the new names keen to give the regular competitive crew a run for their money!

As a recap; Saturday will see unseeded riders out against one another for the privelidge of going through to the final rounds on Sunday. Fun and enjoyment again is the emphasis so the newcomers must not feel any presure, feel free to be as relaxed or serious as you like!

On Sunday the heat will be turned up a little as the riders who prove themselves on the Saturday meet the more experienced riders to determine our State Champions and establish an official State Ranking. A reminder that this State Ranking will be used to determine qualifiers for events next season such as the Gravity Games, the Freestyle Nationals, and finally the seeding for the next Freestyle State Titles.

It's going to be a great spectacle both days so we encourage other recreational kiters to come down to Woodies and give the competitors support and all-up enjoy a weekend of kiting at the beach!

We'll have the BBQ running all day Saturday and Sunday to keep competitors sustained and will most likely have drinks, causal dinner, and presentations at the Jervoise Bay Sailing Club on Sunday evening. Other WAKSA members are welcome to partake of the BBQ also.

Entries will close on Thursday 23rd at noon. The entrants list so far is below, and can competitors please make sure their WAKSA membership is up to date.

Hi Guys,

Apologies that the competition rules and judging format are not up yet. I'd hoped to have them up earlier this week for you all to familiarise yourselves with, then ran into trouble locating electronic versions. They will be available by the end of the day.

Looks like we have wind!

HaHa Damo,

Yeah we might give you a break and let you have a kite :)

This is the link to read up on the Rules and Judging Criteria:

http://www.waksa.org.au/state-titles-2006-rules-and-judging/

The current wind forecast for Saturday is Sly 20-30 in the afternoon, so we are aiming to commence heats around 12pm. Can ALL (seeded and unseeded) competitors please be at Woodies at 10am Saturday to ensure we have adequate time for briefing and paperwork. If this time changes I'll let you know. More details in a post a few scrolls down.

Some of you have asked not be on before certain times. We'll do our best to accommodate this, however we can't confirm anything as you range from 3 of the 4 divisions.

Hi Everyone,

It's great to have had such a positive, if late, response to the WA State Freestyle Titles!

It looks like it is going to get pretty windy on Saturday avo so we're aiming for a 12pm start.

Please be at Woodies North side at 10am in order to complete remaining paperwork and listen to the briefing. Youth (under 18) will need a parent/guardian to co-sign their indemnity form.

The wind for Sunday is potentially dodgy, so can seeded riders please be at Woodies on Saturday too in case we need to push through the heats. The Youth, Masters, and Womens seeded riders definitely need to be there on the Saturday as the draw could easily progress up to your heats.

For the Open Mens, the lower seeded riders especially need to be there Saturday as the draw is likely to get up to your heats as well, instead of leaving them till the Sunday.

Anyone with a good set of muscles is welcome to be at Woodies from 8am to help get everything set up :)

Please pass this info on to others you know are competing to make sure everyone receives it. I will post this on Seabreeze as well.

See you all there!

Hi Vert,
Dale was kinda handling that one earlier on and in the last couple of days we've had a whole number of issues that have bumped everything else down the list of importance, so it hasn't been discussed in more detail of late...
I reckon definitely bring them down and we'll see what the general consensus is.

i just read this on the WAKSA link

The selection of equipment is at the riders discretion but moves will be judged with degree of difficulty being a major factor eg if a rider has a board with no handle they will score higher for board-offs in freestyle.

can anyone please explain the logic behind this rule
a board off is a board off (and some board offs are easier with out the handdle anyway)

Nice one Damo!

Opening a can of worms.

I'm going to ride with a blindfold, so how do I get rated?

It's all about "styling" and having a laugh.

I do like the fact that there will be no published scores....that certainly will save my ass a bit.....because I know I've got 6 min. and then its over

Wind looks great and I really look foward to seeing all the action on the weekend.

Damo,

Instead of reinventing the wheel regards judging we just took it off the KPWT website (as was used in GG and similar to PKRA).

Being a judge feel free to discuss it with the others and we can always modify anything you disagree with and let competitors know in the briefing.

they are NOT on - they are going off
WHAT A TOTALLY AWESOME DAY
The dunes full of spectators, the beach packed with even more and the reliable old Doc kicking in early enough to get the comp underway about as early as would have been organisationally possible.
For those looking at coming down tomorrow here's how things stand :-
SUNDAY will see the finals of the juniors ; all rounds of the masters and all but Round 1 of the open mens.
It will be one hell of a days kiting.
JUNIORS - all power to you guys - the competition was super HOT with every competitor giving it his/her utmost best shot. If this is the future of WA kiting then bring it on! Every single one of you deserved a medal today for sure. Serious competitive kiting with plenty of action - it was fantastic to watch you guys - every single one of you busting fully powered up moves. Well done - every heat very impressive.
WOMENS - very keen competition. Sent out in the cranking (up to 30kts) late avo breeze for the final rounds took courage and skill & thats what we saw. No holding back from our WA girls thats for sure. Congratulations to Jess who took out the title in a tough won set of very closely contested rounds.
OPEN MENS - if the first unseeded round is anything to go by we are in for an unbelievable day tomorrow. Every single heat of round 1 was an intense gladatorial battle of BIG gutsy moves. Cant wait.
MASTERS - our (waksa's) one apology for the day. With the promise of running at least the preliminary rounds today every masters entrant stayed till stumps only to have the full series of masters rounds put off until tomorrow. Sorry guys but 'we did the best with what we got'. Every decision made was made with as much consideration of everyone involved as possible.
Look on the bright side - ALL OF YOU have now got tomorrow to look forward to

If they have not collapsed from exhaustion already I hope someone in the scoring loop will post official results & names of qualifiers going thru to tomorrow
IMHO - I reckon everyone, on & off the water, was a winner today.

My pick for Kiter of the Day - Elaine Strueli, my friend & hero, kicked the proverbial big-time in the juniors & proceeded thru in the Womens to some unbelievable level (round 3 I think ?). All that from an almost novice, melville kiter, young lady who thought she was coming down poke her nose into 2 round 1 appearances.
U R da girl Elaine

they are NOT on - they are OVER.
What a weekend
We did it - 2 weeks ago it was almost not going to happen but since then the drive & enthusiasm of both organisers & competitiors has resulted in the successful running of a great event.
Today we saw the flukey on/off wind cause considerable time restraint on the planned program BUT despite the light winds "We Got A Result" - in every division.
I will leave it to the official recorders to post the official results but to save you all the suspense here's how I saw it :-
Open Mens
1st Dan Anderson 2nd Adam Ratjeweski
Womens - as per yesterdays post
Jess 1st place in a tough fought battle over Ester from Holland.
Juniors
1st Simon Witcherman 2nd Brad ? equal 3rd Toby Penno/Matt ?
Masters
1st Paul (VB Man) Comerford 2nd Jonathon Keys
SORRY (for the missing places & names) thats about all I could catch up with and, even then, I stand to be corrected by the official report.
All in All - imho - a fantastic result.
I hope everyone involved - competitors, spectators, judges, organisers, volunteers & general helpers all had a great weekend.

We all know it can (and will be) done bigger & better.
This years event was organised by a raw, inexperienced crew with a ridiculously short lead time. We have already resolved to have the 07 WA State Titles surpass this years event in many ways. In a few weeks time we plan on having a full-on debriefing session. We would welcome any/all feed-back from all sectors to build into our planning for 07. Please feel free to forward any 'constructive criticism' to the waksa committee : [email protected]
We really would appreciate having everyones reaction to build on BUT we would also very much prefer not to have any negative stuff posted here or elsewhere. say no more
Congrats to all winners & to all competitors. Thanks to the judges for a really top effort (above beyond by a long way) & thanks to the many helping hands who willingly mucked in at the beginning & end of each day to help get the job done.
and, BTW, that finale sunset over Woodies Pt was just TOO GOOD - gotta just luurve WA dont ya ?

For those in equal positions with others, please do not read into anything regards who is listed first here; whoever was first up in the draw is listed first and so on down the draw. No favouratism I promise :)

Well done to all competitors, officials, unofficial officials, judges, and everyone who chipped in to help. Especially thank you to the competitors for your patience waiting for it to be your turn and for being understanding that due to the lack of wind today we could not complete a proper double elimination in the Open Mens, Youth, and Masters.

I will post the overall resulting WA rankings once I have confirmed exactly who are not WA residents.

Thanks for the enthusiasm and see you next year!

Great weekend WAKSA.

Thanks so much for putting this on. At least 6 people gave their whole weekend and then some so we could have the event. Getting to Woodies before 10am, schleping tents, bbq gear, food, drinks, ice etc. etc.; then sitting around in the hot sun and seeing to it that the event went off.......and it sure did on Sat. as there were great winds. But it was today that was hard....very little wind and then too late, but everyone got a go, and a result was achieved.....bravo!

The comp was supposed to be about having fun, and I certainly did. It was especially nice to see such a great group of people all in one beautiful spot.

Special thanks to Phil for saving what must have been about 10 kites adrift with his mighty mouse (cool little boat).

No wind and work again tomorrow...but the memories, and of course the ranking! What a crack up But I've got braging rights for at least a year...........so come on all you old men, get your act together for 07 and take the 6 min. plunge

Special congrats. to Dan Anderson for pulling the move of the comp....which was creativity in action.......the Blind Dog Piss...I do hope we have a photo of this one.

Great weekend all round guys and gals. Big thanx to Jess, VB, Phil, Alex, Dale, Jan, Damo, Bonny and all the others who helped out. Look forward to next years comp but will have to spend some serious hours learning some of those flash kite loopy moves i saw on display over the weekend...

PS. some seriously good shots here by the way www.karloperisic.com/sport/kitesurfing.html
