Hey guys, after seeing the thread for the National Freestyle comp, I began wondering about the WA state titles.

Can anyone tell me when & where the WA State Titles are held & if there are any videos/pics I can see of the action?
I've searched the forums & the WAKSA site, but I'm not having any luck.

Cheers.

Wow, I thought I'd have gotten a reply from someone who knows by now.

I'm not sure if I've asked the wrong question or not & there's some sort of political turmoil preventing a local event, but I would have thought that we would have a regular State Title Freestyle Comp here in WA.

I'm a bit flat out at the moment, so I can't have as much of a look on the net as I would like, but I have found that NSWKBA is at least talking about their state titles, SAKSA seems to be having an event on the 6th Feb, and Victoria KBV had theirs on the 22nd November 2009, I couldn't find much in QLD though the Coconet mob had one last year, but I'm not sure if it was for the current season or not.

But nothing for WA!
I think I saw a whisper of something that happened in 2007.

So what does all this mean?
Do we not have enough talent/interest/sponsors here in WA to support a State Title event?
Is WA really the 'Wait Awhile' state for kiteboarding as well as everything else?

I may have missed something, but it's a bit of a shame, I was looking forward to seeing what the local kiters could do, at the top state level.
Obviouly I'd love to attend a local event to watch the action live, as I'm sure others would who can't get to the interstate events when they would like.

I hope someone can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks.

Does that mean that WAKSA doesn't think there is enough talent here in WA to justify a State Title comp?

And going by the prequalifying rules, the only way we'll see WA guys in the upcoming National Comp is by wild card entry only?

I don't no about talents but they just love looking after the old men.

What i heard from the nationals that i went to was that WA has more spots than all the other states because theres more AKSA Members but WA riders don't compete as much, probably due to the distance/cost, so its easy to compete u just have to show u can ride at a national level by video or photos. Thats how it was a couple of years ago anyway.

That's a shame, it would be good to see a live event over here.

It's quite ironic really, here we have a healthy outdoor sport that is only accessible to watch at a top level (locally) by sitting on your backside in front of a computer.

If the old boys are the ones looked after, maybe they should have an old boys comp?

Oceanfire,

You seem very keen on the idea of a WA state titles event.

This is just an idea, but maybe you could get involved with WAKSA and get the event up & running? You know, it's usually better to be in the tent pissing out than outside pissing in...

It's not the wrong question and there's no politics preventing a local event as you put it but if the 8 person WAKSA committee wasn't so flat out right now organising an event for several hundred kiters, you know, maybe if someone with the time got on board...

best,

Juddy

G'day Juddy,
I wasn't criticizing, at least I wasn't intending to, I was just asking the question as I am very new to the 'scene' & am keen on learning as much as I can.

As awesome as it would be to be involved, being a complete nooby I'd feel very misplaced & probably quite unsuited to be involved in organizing such an event, it would be awesome, though I'm sure there's plenty of people more suited to it than me.

I'm sure the WAKSA people support kiters very well, I was not trying to direct or encourage any bad feelings their way.

Youth is wasted on the young.......George Bernard Shaw

Maybe if those who want state titles got together and ran something WAKSA might look at funding the winners to go East to compete?

Personally i've never understood why you'd have the Nats over East when you have insane wind and places like woodies etc here

1-Because no one will organise it.
2-Its too expensive it cost me over 1500 to travel too nats last year, id gurantee numbers would drop if they were held in WA.

WA would be the perfect location for the event though, flat water and consistant wind the best kiter would deffiently show at the end of the day.

Unless the youngsters want to org., volunteer and run it then I'm afraid it ain't gonna happen. Who really needs a comp when the riders in WA know who's where in the pecking order. The best part about the comps. is the gathering; and Core Slider Jam and Kite Stock do offer those opportunities.

Gruezi,

I hear what you're saying about organising events etc, but maybe there's a few committed freestylers who want to organise an event with WAKSA just waiting for the opportunity to come along? Season 10/11 ain't so far away really is it?

Oceanfire, I have PM'd you. Get back to me?

Done mate.

And yeah, I'm sure with all the kiters out there, there should be some that are willing to pitch in & make something big happen for their sport, in our neck of the woods.
The more the merrier/ many hands make the workload lighter & all that.
