WAKSA BIG AIR

When?
Sunday 10th December

Where?
Contacios, North Scarborough Beach, Scarborough

What Time?
Registration from 1 - 1:30pm, first boosting heats at 2pm or as soon as it is windy enough.

Entry Fee?
$10. Please bring correct change.

Prizes?
Biggest boost takes all! The winner takes the sum total of all entry fees, e.g. if 50 people enter the winner takes home $500.

Format?
No divisions, big air is big air regardless of whether you are man, woman, or child!
5 minute heats with a 2 minute turn around.
2 competitors per heat.
The longest hang time recorded on the day wins, you must land the jump. This is not an elimination format, it does not matter who you happen to be in a heat with, only your best air counts.
If time and conditions permit, a final boosting session between the top scoring 4 or 6 riders will be held at the end to determine the overall winner.
The duration of heats and number of competitors per heat may change depending upon conditions and numbers of entrants on the day.

What Else?
WAKSA will have the trusty BBQ going to keep you fed and softies to keep you watered.

Contact?
Ask here on the forum or email Jess at [email protected] for any further queries. Keep an eye on the forum for updates as the day draws closer, also check out www.waksa.org.au

Will it be a C kite with almighty altitude or a bow kite with the hang time? Sunday will tell!

p.s That is not an invisible thread hanging from the channel 7 helicopter to my kite!

Hi Jan,
It has to be longest hangtime; you can't objectively measure height but you can time the duration of a jump. If you come up with a way to measure height let us know :)

SIMPLE !!

Hold a ruler vertical (with the zero of the scale at the bottom, Dummy!), and one meter from your eye which should be pressed as close as humanly possible to the sand. Use a laser measuring device (- land surveyors will know what I mean -) to measure the horizontal distance from your eyeball to the jumper just before he/she/it leaves the water. Call this measurement H2 At the zenith of the jump, note where your line of sight intersects the ruler Call this value V1.

The height of the jump (V2)can be calculated from the following simple formula:

V2 = (V1 x H2) / H1

where: V2 is in the same units as the ruler, and H1 and H2 are in metres.

Forgot to mention:

H1 = 1m, and therefore the equation reduces to:

V2 = V1 x H2.

Hi T.E.,

Just wondering...

Is it practically feasable to measure the distance to the kiter using the surveying laser stuff ?? I thought there would need to be a reflective target (prism?) at the location of the kiter??? Thanks.

Hi Tribal Elder,
Well, this is your formal invite to be the official height measuring person on Sunday!
Make sure you can measure 2 people simultaneously, and get boosts close on the back of each other.
Your payment will be first hot dog of the barbie and a confirmed seat in the shade.
See you then!
Jess
PS We'll bring the stop watches just in case :)

Does a modern GPS have enough resolution and a quick enough sampling time to measure this? I haven't used one for over decade but I've heard they've improved the accuracy a lot since then.

a standard altimeter would do it no?

as long as it was water proof you put it on before heat set the needle it should record height?

whats altimeter accuracy like? not sure but gps is accurate within a few meters?

need two floating pontoons with towers and an arm with a soft as punching bag strung between them, highest touch wins

Heres a spanner for the works

The problem I see is how do you run heats when the wind could be say 15 knots at 2 pm but 25 knots by 4 pm? The later your heat the more advantage you would have if the wind increased?

Wouldnt you run it straight through as quickly as possible where everyone gets 2/3 go's at it and you count their best?

then run it through again twice more in random order so every one gets a fair go at it?

let the debate begin

I would have presumed that was the plan anyway? If not, I agree that is a valid arguement you have raised Carl.

A BIG AIR event is a battle of the blimps.
Crew will launch the biggest fat-arse kites in their quivers...
and then attempt to deal with the grunt.

It just so happens I have a cheap 16m for sale.
Refer 'Xmas present' topic.
Good luck to all aerialists.

Yep,
We're aware of this and discussed contingencies at the committee meeting last night.
Depending upon numbers and interest we'll run through everyone a second time. Carl suggestion of random order the second time is a good idea. If there's only 20 people that's easy done, if there's 50 or more then time may not permit it. Also we understand people don't always want to hang around all day waiting for their second go, so on the day when registration closes at 1:30pm we'll see how many people there are, if there're all happy to hang around a few hours until their second go, and then take it from there.
It's gonna be windy either way unless the forecast suddenly changes, and the plan is to only start heats at 18 knots which is about the minimum for decent boosting to begin.
Will be posting general rules and a map of the lay-out before Sunday so keep an eye out for it.

Well the forecast is looking GREAT!
Looks like we'll easily get over 18 knots, possibly even for the scheduled 2pm start :)
Map and rules going up tonight.
