It seams to me bows are just for the average kook, all the top pros doing well are on C..............

Why is that a surprise?

One if more forgiving, the other offers higher performance at the price of usability.

I met Greg Thijsse in capetown and he ride for cabrinha on bow kites. Might not be the best in the world but he is certianly a pro.

Jeff Tobias (SS Pro rider) - Turbo Diesel 2
Ben Wilson (SS Pro) - SS Link (sometimes)
Andre Phillip (Cabrinha Pro rider) - Switchblade 2

I think most of the cabrinha pro's are using switchblades.

I can only speak of the above brands, I'm sure there are pro's that use bows from other brands.

So Marty, maybe contact some of the above, and let them know that they are the average kook.

The performance of the bow kites (or hybrids - anything with a bridle) nowdays are pretty amazing and allow pro's to do all of the unhooked moves that the c-kite riders are doing.

As soon as you are a pro Marty let us all know what you are riding

Who really cares what style/colour/brand etc etc - get out there and enjoy. They all fly, they all jump etc etc just depends where your leaning towards. They are not hopeless/wimpy/gay/kooky or any other term that is easy to splash around. Horses for courses so f**kn giddy up!!

I ride 2005 Cs cause I'm poor but I love em. If I had the money it would be pretty hard to go past a hybrid/bow but I don't and I haven't lost any sleep after a wicked 3 hr session on my old Cs yet!

It comes down to what company the pro rides for and what kites that company makes. If a company only makes c's the they ride c's, if they make bows they ride bows. For the companies that make both it the riders personal choice of what they think they'll get the most out of in the conditions.

Why is it that when someone wants to invoke some discussion on topics such as bow kites or strapless riding half the forum users immediately go on the defensive....................I thought forums were for this sort of discussion.

I'm sick of the same old response "it doesnt matter what you ride so long as you are enjoying yourself". Its all good and well to enjoy yourself but that wasnt the question.

The question is a completely wrong observation -

The question says that "all the top pros doing well are on C" and this is wrong...

So all we're doing is pointing this out - not going on the defensive.

Dunno?
Is that OK for an answer .
Perhaps you should ask them .
ALso perhaps you get the responses that seem to annoy you because you have made a perceived generalisation in your question .Maybe try this "Why don't some pros ride bows and some do ?Why is it so ?Ploise exploin?"

Just wondering where is the question ?

Seems more like a statement to me (just stirring a little more )

See below for proper contribution to the forum :

I currently ride a Switchblade 2 ( Bow ) but are now considering a C kite ( perhaps a fuel ) just to try something different. It has always been my understanding that Bow kites seem to offer more hang time, whereas C kites are much better for looping ( ie : faster in the loop etc... )
I may be misinformed please correct me if so .

good contribution harry...

I'm also considering a fuel as my small kite.
C - kites (I think) give more direct power through loops and turns but are not neccessarily faster. I think that you get a more direct feel.
I used to ride C-kites and liked the feel of flying them better than the bow kites when I first tried them, but liked the range and de-power. The new fuels have great range and depower which is why I may try one. I will always keep and ride my bow kite though.

Hope that's a good answer to your sensible post...

Pros drive Formula One cars, I don't... Maybe I should consider selling my car and having a chat to Ferrari, McLaren or BMW to see if they can get me one.

I'm not sure if I can get my sat nav and my stereo in the car. Forget about taking any girls or kitegear with me. I'm a pro. I'll drive a F1

Kook logic Marty!!!

P.S.: I'm sure most/if not all pros are able to do their tricks on a bow or on a C if they have a bit of time to get used to the flying style. So don't blame the gear for your inability to become a pro. Go train...

If we rephrase this question: Why do I not kite like a pro if I ride a C kite?

Back in the days it was High vs Medium aspect kites... Non pros "should" go Medium, Pros and wannabe's should go High Aspect... and this was actually pretty good advice.... same apply here... stop looking at the pros for the best kit (They can perform on almost anything).... look at what makes you progress the fastest...

The more "pro" the equipment, the more critical your control... it may jump 3m higher, but you only jump high 5/10 jumps, whereas the "other" kite you jump high 8/10 jumps... (Apply this to whatever you wish... if you are doing f16's, then this post OBVIOUSLY does not refer to you)

Pros could outperform mere mortals like us on 02 gear even if we had the latest and greatest.
Time on the water and skill makes a pro, not the style of kite they ride.

That’s not true I ride c-kites and have taken a spin on the girlfriend’s switchblade. Difference is in how you handle them while a c-kite may not depower as much as a bow I can still depower a fair bit. On the other end if all you ride is bows and you set them up right you can get the kite to deliver the same amount of power it's just a different power and feeling. In the end of the day it comes down to technique and what you feel good riding. I love the feel of my c-kite and hated the switchblade. If you use your "smarts" either is easy to ride the c-kite is just more physically demanding and with the new c-kites (which are more or less hybrids) the depower is vastly improved. Go the c-kite. Oh and to answer the first q could you imagine inverting your kite in the middle of a heat your screwed.
