I've been reading with some curiosity about wave riding clinics which seem to be popping up about the place. The question is - how do you practically teach a kitesurfing wave riding clinic?

I mean - I can see how surf schools do it. You're all together bobbing around, and you get the theory at the beach etc. I can also see how kite surfing freestyle classes are practically teachable because flat, shallow water enables an instructor to be up and close.

But, with surfing a wave - how do you practically teach that? You surely can't be talking a jetski trailing some poor bugger with a loud speaker, let alone wait for days where the surf is up! I can only imagine being taught the theory, watching DVD's or your mates is the way to do it.

Going away for a wave riding clinic seems more a marketing idea than a practical one?

I see what u r saying. Speak to Ben Wilson at benwilsonsurf they film you and analyse your style and help you identify your week points and strong points and how to improve.

HAY TOM , The way its done in our area is using the headzone helmets, it is very easy to talk to the student from the beach, we have found this very effective, for your able to get them on the right waves, and talk about board and kite possition on the run. Alot of surf coachs are using the same helmets to improve there riders. REGARDS MRWHITE AKRM

Lots of kite schools use Headzone Helmets for teaching, a few surf schools use them as well. As well as protecting the head, they are invaluable for teaching, Instructors can communicate with students, be it in the surf or on flat water.
I wouldn't teach without them, better for everyone, student and instructor,
Surf riding has many things things that are can be taught eg Crash your kite in the surf impact zone and getting it relaunched or getting to the shore with your kite not trashed by the waves.
Learning from someone elses EXPERIENCE is what its all about.
Ben Wilsons surf Clinics will be of good value to anybody who is interested in this style of riding, If I had the money to spare i would like to go myself.

Technology to the rescue! Cheers guys - I reckon the helmet idea would help the issue. Does Bens' course use a helmet?

hi Tom -
I am the co -ordinator for Ben's clinics.

We arent using helmets in the clinic,(but i think they are a good tool) our approach is regular feedback to the participant. During each session the rider is focussing on some specific points.

What we are focussing is sharing Ben's knowledge and experience with the students.

The course covers a wide range of topics but we do teach a series of key basic principles that immediately take your riding to another level.

From there each person has his/her technique analysed and then Ben sets out a plan for their progression.

There are 2 spots avail this weekend - due to a cancellation.

thanks

Hi Bruce,

The "Radio Helmets" are what is called the Headzone Coaching System used by premiere schools in Australia and many other countries around the world. There is no other way to teach these days and the customers get real value for money in their coaching as it is "Real Time Coaching" not the go out try this and I'll correct you after you do it wrong technique of yesterday.

If you require any information on the system you are about to use then please call. We have been using them in our wave coaching and flatwater lessons / clinics for a couple of years now with great results.

Board carzy in newcastle has been using the system now for years and the students love it, so easy straight into the water and they learn as fast as you can teach them.
Head zone is brilliant

hey we just had a great clinic clnic here in newcastle - 9 very happy riders many of who were new to surfboards and waves.

Everyone got to accelerate their riding and many progressed to riding strapless and unhooking as well as improving their general wave riding repitoire.

We did get to offer students the use of headzone helmets and had great feedback from those that did use it so we will be using them in future clinics.

I will post some pics and movie clip in the next couple of days.
