Hi Folks lets start a thread on wave sailing

Some sugestions I have... please corect me if you think I am wrong (I dont doubt you will!)

1) If you want to learn to wave sail do it were there are low or no kitesurfers learning in the more popular spots just causes angst amongst other wave sailors - kiters using the area

2) Never remain in the same zone tacking in and out doing single turns off the wave back and forth e.g ride down the line (Down wind)

3) Always look over your shoulder if you are jibing back onto the wave

4) Always look upwind of you as the rider up wind of you and on your inside has the right of way if already riding

5) show some consideration I know the person technically heading out has the right of way (Windsurf rules)but if your heading out and see someone wave riding be a top bloke /chick and hangt for a mpoment or two and let em ride it out dont force them off it

Its a learning process for all but there is a scary amount of what I call "Unconcious Riding" (riding like there is no one else in the water) I just like everyone else am guilty of this occasionally but not to this degree.

Theres a start for now!

phat air to you all

WE ALWAYS WORKED ON THE RULE IN ANY SPORT WHERE THE PERSON ON THE WAVE HAS RIGHT OF WAY AND EVERYONE ELSE GETS OUT OF THE WAY.

Good post...wave with more one person can be frustrating, it always feels like the other peerson is in the way, and no doubt they feel that way about you.

Id like to add...

Example: if there are 2 people wave sailing the same area of a beach break. If they are coming in, and you are heading out head-to head, its really annoying if, to avoid the head-to head confrontation, you just turn back in front of them. This completly farqs their run in as they will be behind you in the wave zone, and unless they turn back out, you will be boxed in between the wave zone and the beach with them behind.

Suggestion : time your runs so that you cross over out in the ocean somewhere, and each person then gets a bit of freedom in the wave zone. Turn back when you see the guy coming out of the waves. The criss-cross action with the cross out of the wave zone is easy to work.

Also, if you are saling slightly downwind of someone as they are coming out..don't be surprised if that person launches off a ramp and lands on you. Also, need to jump sometimes to get over the waves. So try to be UPWIND! of someone coming out of the waves.

Wave sailing can be as frustrating as hell with traffic.

I'm hearing you and are totaly with you CAUTION

But I think the official rule (windsurf) is rider on the way out has the right of way, we have to try keep consistent with other "formalised" rules or no one knows whats going on windsurfer or kitesurfer.

tikiy oure suggestion : time your runs so that you cross over out in the ocean somewhere, and each person then gets a bit of freedom in the wave zone. Turn back when you see the guy coming out of the waves. The criss-cross action with the cross out of the wave zone is easy to work.

I go by this one always it is simple and effectivly eliminates congestion in the lineup in fact this type of system could handle many riders if all played ball and cut the sefishness and or "unconciousnes riding"

Good post Carl, seems to me wave riding is at odds with a normal tack for kiters, BUT I've got a possible solution..........I'm gonna convert some big green rubber HULK hands that my 3 year old son got for christmas from my mad 45 year old brother(they have a built in CRASH sound when you hit things and lights flash) into a couple of big yellow arrows on my hands, so when I want to go down wind for a wave ride, I can point in the direction I am planning to go...other kiters will see my hand direction and will not cut me off down wind, If they cut me off I could smash the water with my ex- HULK hands and scare them with the CRASHING sounds and flashing lights. This of would best at sunset.
