Hey everyone,

I live in San Francisco and I'm considering coming out to WA for vacation in late October since I hear your wave kiting is rediculously fantastic. I'm wondering if anyone can fill me in on a few details. Here are some questions I'm hoping you guys can help answer:

1. Is there a good chance for wind and waves in late October?
2. Where are the best spots to hunt for barrels, and for nice long waves?
3. Are there any spots with rights? (My husband loves lefts, but I'm all about the rights)
4. Are your best wave spots remote (that is, do we have to camp?), or are they near towns where we can rent a house or a hotel room?
5. I've heard your waters are sharky - no worries there, Whitey is popular out here in San Francisco, too (we use the big ones as jumping ramps) - but are there any other hazards I should be aware of? Box jellies? Sea snakes? Horse flies the size of my head? Kangaroos with a taste for ripstop fabric?

I really appreciate your help! Thank you in advance!
Anyone who posts a reply will be rewarded with a lifetime of sick waves and strong winds. :)

Depends how much time and money you have... drive down to Esperance buy a boat, become mates with the local surfers and fishing crews and be taken to Cyclops... alternatively just kite surf the waves down at 4th mile like the rest of the dudes do down in Esperance. 2 to 3 meter waves most times so I suppose that's not bad huh!

heres a nice few pics for you http://www.surfermag.com/features/onlineexclusives/cyclops-pics/

You dudes don't mess around! That wave looks delicious. Tell me it gets windy there!

What's the wind like during October?

Don't know about whether there is any wind in Esperance (south coast) in October.

Best bet is to go North. Further north you go, the more likely you will get wind at that time of the year as a bit early for Perth's summer seabreezes.

If you want waves, go to Gnaraloo. 10 hrs North of Perth, remote, mostly camping, but some basic accommodation at the station ("ranch") homestead.

In answer to your questions:

1) yes, but you need to head north
2) Gnaraloo
3) No
4) Yes
5) sharks are too well fed to worry about us; no other dramas

Make sure you check Geraldton out for the most varied and consistent wave riding available on the West Coast - lefts, rights, beach, reef, big or small with perfect flat water conditions as well. Drop into G-Spot Extreme Sports and they will fill you in further....

Hey Cimeron,

Don't know if I would necessarily go up to Gnaraloo unless you are really at a good level. Gnaraloo is not for everyone. It has a very dodgy launch from a tiny beach sheltered from the wind by a rise in cross offshore conditions, you have to ride out over razor reef which is regularly exposed in low tides whilst you deal with a kite behaving like a bucking bronco from the turbulent wind. Once over the reef, get out across a bombie which can be so big you can barely boost over the waves.

Once on the wave at Tombies you have to share with up to 50 windsurfers and a couple of other kiters. It is a great wave and is often "all time" and it's all good unless you make a slight error in judgement and get clipped and slammed onto theshallow sharp reef by a heaving set, drop your kite in the surf and get spat out onto the bombie by the very strong sweep current. There is nowhere to come into the land except for the launching beach as the entire coast is jagged rocky cliff. No one can help you at Gnaraloo, your on your own!

Unless you are 110% confident in riding in some of the most extreme waves and conditions on the west coast, then maybe opt for the much safer and almost as much fun Geraldton. As powersails suggests, Geraldton is all time and you will get better wind than Gnaraloo a lot of the time but with the safety of beaches to wash up on if it goes pear shaped.

If you are a mighty wave ripper and have loads of big wave experience, then by all means do Gnaraloo, just know it ain't easy and it's definately NOT FORGIVING! Nearest Hospital is a little under 2 hours away.

Enjoy WA!

Good winds,

Dear Cimeron,
When you fly into Perth, hire a car(get a van), drive to a kite shop,
and ask directions to the nearest decent wavekiting spot.

The shop will probably tell you to go to Lancelin (about 1.5hrs north).
When you do Lano, some dude will tell you to go to Coronation Beach (about 5hrs north).
When you do Coro, some dude will tell you to go to Gnaraloo (about 7hrs north).

When you trash all your gear at Gnaraloo, it's time to head back to Frisco.

The forcast is really bad for this summer........
Seems there will be no wind and waves....

If you land in Geraldton go to G-Spot for directions.
Tim is taped into the conditions and regularly kites the best spots in the zone.
Theres plenty of strong wind equipment to buy there suited for the area.

Leave your big bow at home.

I seem to remember something like a wave out on the reef at Wedge Island too, but requires pretty serious 4wd vehicle to get there. Gnarloo is also remote as all buggery, if you want to sleep in a bed go for Geraldton.

October's probably a bit early in the season for wind, but there's always the Zoo at Margaret River. Reputedly pretty scary, I've never been there.

I heard north of Gnaraloo is gonna have no wind all Summer, no waves either. I agree with Greenpat once you trash your gear and need to be Medivac'ed outa Gnaraloo theres no use going further north.
Aparently the waters reeaaly cold and murky too.
Lano and Corro's are great and the windsurfers buy beers for kiters all the time.[}:)]

lurch is right, and not only is the water freezing and murky north of gnaraloo, but the stingers and crocs come out in force over summer. the coast between coral bay and the tip of north west cape is especially unsuited to kiting and is best avoided at all costs

Slave knows all.

Make sure you stock up on at least 3 kites and spares because there are very few shops after Gero.

WA is pretty remote and a BIG place.....got to remember that there are only 2 Mio. people living in a space half the size of the USA (without Alaska). WAAAAAAAAA is mostly desert, wind and waves...enjoy. Check out Champion Bay B&B while passing through Gero.

And remember, no liquids on board.
