Any body interested in a wave riding comp at Scabs in the sea breeze, all in, judge as per normal surf comp, judges are the heat 3 behind your heat, 3 riders per heat,10 min heats. Who cares if you ride no straps/straps or twin tip. The best SURFER will win, most varied moves, closest to the white water for longest single wave. Run the comp over 1 arvo until a winner is found, then go to pub to drink and socialize. I'll Sponser the day with $500 bucks. $300 first place, $ 200 for beer at the pub later. Minimum wind required to get a kiter on 12m kite up wind. Maybe late Jan 2006. They have had similar comps in NSW this year. Keep the comp local so 90% can make it.

was actually thinking today a wave comp would be cool. maybe even waksa might be able to help out. brighton-scarborough is probally the most popular. if you lock in a weekend late jan after everyone is back from chrissy break etc you can be nearly guarantted that you will get wind one of the days. i'm sure can even get other sponsers to help out in some way or another. anyway count me in . there could also be half a dozen ladies want to enter too. if you get 3 at least you could also run ladies division. i know for a fact guys like fireman mike, bevo, corey, jonesy, jake, walker, rezza, glen, mecco(if he's kiting by then) and alot of the other brighton crew will be keen plus all the other kiters around perth that kite cott and leighton etc. could be fun.

Yep, Count me in, sounds like a hoot. A better idea would be to compete for honour only, and put the whole $500 on the bar for all to enjoy.

Comps just for fun are the ticket and usually when people ride their best too, as soon as there is money at stake, some people get too serious which puts pressure on the judges. You'll get a decent turn out without the prize money and the bar tab will bring a great team of socializers/riders.

Pick a date and I'll be there!

You bet WAKSA will be happy to support events such as this. That is a core part of our game plan for this year.

The WAKSA Event's Committee has been working on a series of different events for the coming season which we will be announced shortly. I don't want to give too much away yet because this is Jess's job, but some of these are going to be absolutely fantastic fun.

We do need our own State based ranking system for local talent, so amongst the events we are putting on which are designed to include kiters of all skill levels, there will be judged events. Anyone can sponsor an event or put up prizes and WAKSA will provide assistance wherever requested.

Jess van den Burge is the new Chair of the Events sub-committee.

I'm in! 28/29 Jan sounds great. I agree with Darren - put the $$$ into the social side and keep it fun. Be good to see if WAKSA could get a couple of Surfing WA judges to build a stronger relationship between the two sports.

I think by then the Banks at brightion will be well and truly GONE!

We probably need to look at holding it a bit further up the beach say at Contacio or trigg as the banks remain there all year round

THE DEVILS ADVOCATE / Can o worms / Pandoras Box whatever it needs to be thrashed out

Any suggestions on how to judge fairly between straps no straps hooked unhooked twin tiop and surfboard.

IMO it is undoubtly harder to ride strapless and unhooked this is progressive riding do we reward this??

Now go for it - opinions...

Sure it's more difficult to ride strapless and unhooked... just like it's more difficult for a surfer to take off switch. But if you're not getting the turns, none of that matters f%$k all.

It's all about getting the turns in. How you get there is secondary. It's not about posing on a fashionable board - it's about smacking it.

Everyone's gonna have a different style - judge the turns they're getting, not their equipment.

'nuff said.

this is always gonna come up lets just tease it out

But if you are getting the turns in I think it does matter,

If some one on a S/board strapless and unhooked can smack a lip as hard as someone riding a twin tip, IMO it is simply harder and should be rewarded - Dont know how you could judge this fairly though??

points for looks and style.

or else we end up with a sport thats difficult but looks retarded, and everyhting turns into a circus with people pushing themselves to do the next stupid thing. Bit like the current wakestyle movement (im not saying wakestyle in general im saying how it is at the moment, eg grabbeb mobe 7's to blind with a kiteloop.) , get as many spins in as low as possible. Sure its hard but it looks hectic and silly and riders are losing style to force the moves.

most unhooked strapless riding is done with a poo stance. I don't know how you can automaticallty reward people for riding like that.

This is a great idea I love it , I will be there

Also agree about the money , maybe pay some judges ( thankless boring job ) rather than getting the riders to judge .Get a more consistant score .

As for the equipment debate , I agree it should be judged on what is being done on the wave and the style it is being done with . This is where unhooked is going to pick up the points for more style .

With straps you have more controle over the board but without you are free to move your feet around for a more balanced position .
Degree of difficulty does deserve points I think .

I like the idea of getting extra points for riding switch

Location I think would probably be better at Contacio's , better banks and safer .

Straps versus Strapless in waves ??

It's not even a serious debate.
It's just another 'clever' marketing strategy.

The kitesurfing industry believe that images of kiters riding strapless on surfboards in the surf,
may be the KEY.

Their dream of influencing millions of surfers to maybe cross-over to kiting when it's windy,
is ambitious at best.

You see, the average surfer generally hates the wind.
The only two wind directions they know are;
offshore (good), onshore (sh1t), and calm (bliss).

If straps are good enough for tow-in surfers at Chopes, then they are good enough for me and my twin-tip.

I agree, kiting on anything in waves is fun, but nothing beats a strapless surfboard, way more stylish.
Guys like Ryland, Cam Barker and Lee Kav kill it, amongst others.

Not trying to give you a serve Carlo but I think we should get it down to aggressive varied surfing. AS they used to say before the battle, every one grab your own weapon. This stuff about a few pints extra for something more thecnical is really losing the point. A guy can win a heat, who looks worse, and does less powerful moves because because he is choosing to ride unstrapped and unhooked. Open up the comp to all styles of riding and the best kite surfer on the day is champ and gets to drink all the beer. Giving extra points to niche riders takes away from the sport. Just imagine in a surf comp giving a guy extra points for riding switch. Cant see that happening. A few surf style tow comps are going to happen in 2006, the riders will be all judged on ride /style etc, and not if they ride strapped or not. Mike N is on the money - style and ride. Carlo you turn up and ride unstrapped and unhooked and surf better than every on else and you will drink the beer.

A new product is about to come out that will BLUR the ground between unstrapped/strapped surfboard riding. Catch it at your beach soon. Lets hope it works and we all will be ripping harder.

Carl,
Don't say 'whatever'.
Sixteen year-old bimbos say 'whatever'.

I shouldn't debate it but I can't stop myself.

Strapless boards immediately remove the boosting aspect from kiteSURFING.
The (air) ride out thru the break is sometimes more memorable than the (wave) ride coming in.
It's a two-way street.
I'm greedy, I want both.

(PS. Try strapless in 25knots+)

Sounds like fun, 28/29 Jan sounds good.

As for un-hooked, no straps, I dont think it matters. I ride like that because its fun in light wind and I can do better turns than I can without a kite. Not because its tech and trendy.

Im sure the end riders will be strapped in.

Im for putting the cash on the bar, Ry and Jake dont need it anyway.

Perhaps judging could be done by Wave Riding Wannabees like myself....ten of us with cards from 1-10, hold then up, throw out the high and low and use the average.

To impress the judges, anything goes...what looks good to the peanut gallery is all that matters. If you want to wave ride in a dress, strapless or whatever go for it.......

Let me guess ?

Fluffy velcro patch glued to the board.
Twisty velcro on the soles of your booties.

Fly on the wall.

Carlo, Ive been slashing on my new Bryne 6-6 tuflite fish down here at Cott and Leighton for the last 2 months 100% unstrapped, so times unhooked, its like any ting in kiting you do for a couple of days and its pretty easy. Love the freedom when you get it right. Love the back hand reo snaps. Found 4ft Cott on monday night in 20 to 25 knots limiting on my un strapped 6-6, so pulled out the old twin tip and had tthe kite of the year with only 1 other kite out and 15 windsurfers. Love to have a bash with youz guys up at Scabs, along way North for me though. Johnno Keys

25knots and 6ft Tombies is what sold me on strapless.
Best kitesurfing I have ever seen.
It was 5 times over Stuie Martins head (2 or 3 over anyone elses) and the guys were tearing it to pieces.

Carl, I should be working but keep looking at kiting **** on the net. Good to see the lads in Kiteboarder mag and Ryland geting a nice barrel. See ya soon dude. If this comp come soff I my have to make the long trip north to Scabs and do a little practice in the beach break. Ive lost quite a bit of skin on the sand at Leighton recently. Painful this kiting

I'm guessing the windsurfers weren't riding strapless on that day, Shannon ?
The off-the-lip is a bit tricky un-connected.

From what I could see the kiters werent trying to emulate windsurfing, but yes they were still doing floaters and belts off the lip.
