Carl,

Let me spell it out real slowly for you.

If the poleys didn't have straps, they couldn't pull off the big airs off the lip,
or the huge loops on the way out.

Same goes for kiting.

Strapless is limiting the aerial aspects of kitesurfing.
And isn't the big air thing what grabbed your attention to kiting in the first place ?

Now do you get me ?

Carl you did open a can of worms. Why dont we get back to the comp and best surfer on day drinks as much beer as they like, and we all had a good time getting smashed in a 2ft closeout.

Hooked or unhooked, strapped or unstrapped, if your smashing it, your smashing it! Hit the lip, get the air, reo back onto the wave face in the pocket .... perfect 10!

Does this debate take away any cred of Marty getting mini barrels and coverups hooked into his "bow" kite and fastened securely to his wakeboard in bindings????

If we's going to debate about un/hooked and un/strapped, then you are going to have to debate the Flat kite vs "C" kite as well, infact, I vote we rule out red kites, because they are definately faster, that would be an unfair advantage and we'd have to give extra points to blue kite riders.

What about peeps riding with pulley bars?? Oh crap, does a Flat kite bar count as a pulley bar (It has pulleys, 2 in fact!), jees they're heaps more difficult to use than a standard bar, so perhaps they need added points too!

Should also give added points to anyone riding kites older than 2 years because they aren't as easy to ride as the new ones, dont turn as fast etc. And people on longer lines need extra points because thats more difficult than short lines. What about peeps on Mini Mals?? and other peeps on powered wave boards (ie less than 5 feet) as opposed to larger "surf" boards.

OMFG! what if someone were to ride a skim board??? Talk about a fly in the ointment! Now I'm really confused!

Or perhaps we could just judge the most stylish riding on the day and all have fun and no bother about all the technicalities of surf riding.

Lets kite in waves and drink beer later

its not how you ride the wave. it should be how you surf the wave. and above all style wins over anything. whether you are on a twin or surfboard you can definately tell who's ripping. but if your doing the same unstrapped it is harder and should be rewarded. anyway i'm looking foward to money on the bar. hey johnno met up with an innsurance mate of yours Mark Davidson this arvo from over east. good bloke and said to say hello.

I hear ya, Darren.

Ride the wave. Talk about your equipment in the pub after (if you have to).

I wanna see the boys tear up scarbs. Maybe some of the beer should go down before they hit the water?

have 2 divisions one for surfboards and the other for straps (being either on kiteboards or surfboards) and in both cases anything unhooked is gonna score more than hooked in... Isnt that how freestyle moves are scored nowdays....

or if you have say 20min heats ride a twin and surfboard and if some one rides both good then they should be rewarded more for variety.

I don't get the whole surfboard riding thing, why make life difficult for yourself? If you wanna get out there with a kite and ride, then why start adding limitations to your performance.

I always watch those weirdos in the olympics having walking races, and can't help thinking- if you wanna have a race, then go for it and see who crosses the line first, why have an army of marshalls watching every step to make sure one foot is always on the ground.

I guess my opinion is, why complicate things? if you want to ride waves better, then use the tools available to you, sure I can appreciate that a strapless surfboard is gonna be harder to ride, but then maybe I should enter the comp with one hand tied behind my back, cos that is gonna be harder than 2 free hands, and might score me extra points!

I've got nothing against riding surfboards, its alot of fun, but judge the wave riding for what it is, and not for what the riders board looks like.

Anyone seen the Mark Shinn Funk DVD? now that cat has got some serious strapless riding skills!

I say bring on more of this strapless kitesurfing !!

That only means more waves for 'slave.....
because the strapless guys seem to fall off a lot and spend half their time body-dragging after their boards.

Loose surfboards flying around in the break.....
reminds me of the pre-legrope days when I was a surf grommet learning the ropes.

Riding strapless isnt about making life hard for yourself. Its about making your kiting new and interesting again and pushing your own limits.

As for the comp, im sure the guys I kite with will blow up if the conditions are good for a surfboard. ie. light wind and small waves. There wont be any need to bump up the scores beacuse there arent any footstraps or they happen to be unhooked.

Im sure the judges who ever they be will be able to tell who is tearing it up no matter what they are riding.

Im most looking forward to seeing 'slave laying down a few big carves and busting some big ollies to show us all just what is possible.

No need to complicate any of this.... go ride some waves. Doesn't really matter what kind of board someone chooses to ride, how long their lines are, or what colour their skin is.

'nuff said.

Greenleader,
That picture you painted was exactly how kitesurfing was born.
Man, we've gone full circle.

OK before this thing dies due to the tech debate lets lock in a date .

I would like to suggest FEB 11-12 .
All the kids will be back at school and life will be back to normal for most .

As far as the rules go
Lets keep the format as Johnny set out in the first place , after all he is the one putting up the cash he makes the rules .

Judging > I think let the majority rule for a more consistant score , rather than different judges for different heats .

Everybody is a judge that isn't kiting .
15 mins between heats to give the next lot time to judge and then get out in the water .
Also let the spectators judge .

Lets have some fun and see where everybody is at .

Hey Devil-Fish,

Who gives a sh1t about main stream public attention ?

I'd be happy to see kiting in waves remain obscure and elitist.

But freestyle is cool when it's flat.

Season's Greetings
