hi all seeing some of my favourite spots get real crowded lately ( maroochy river mouth ) it is becoming apparent that nobody has any idea of the rules when waveriding with a kite comes into play.. basically the person on the wave riding in HAS right of way and you either stay downwind or upwind of the rider and anticipate that his/her ride may be 100 meters or so.. and get out of the way !!..if you are not actively seeking waves or looking to ride waves stay out of the area and go ride flat water.. it is just real annoying

Aren't we all one of them? But yes, you're right a common sense and knowledge of rules would help. Having the same rules as pole-dancers would help too

When in the 'surf' surfing rules apply, s/he who is on the wave has right of way, particularly s/he is closest to the peak.

exception, we give way to all other water users of course, yes even polies, Exception, serious surf with dedicated wave riding where polies and kiters will need to live together,

Exception, give way to all surfers, especially when at Cactus and Gnarloo.

SAKSA has a thread running on this topic

From a poley's perspective:

I'll do my best to keep out of your way if you're on a wave, but if I'm slogging then I really don't have a lot of choice as to where I go.
I prefer to go upwind of kiters if all other things are equal, but in the end if you're courteous to me then I'll be courteous back.

Big hugs all round

I hear you man! It is getting worse with every session since it has become cool to ride in the waves.

All these tossers who don't even surf - they just have to go "wave riding" and talk about getting a surfboard style board. To these guys, wave riding means doing their usual back and forward riding, but now they do it through the surf, with the occasional jibe timed so that it looks like a top turn. then of course, they run straight back for the beach on the other tack.

I am with jbowman - if you are not actively seeking waves or looking to ride waves stay out of the area and go ride flat water..

If you insist on riding in the surf, take time to learn what it is all about! Recognise that the guys that are really surfing will often go downwind by 200-300m while riding down the line, or linking onto the next bank. Allow room for this - what do you care if you have to do one more zig-zag on your way out?

riding wave's - follow the surf code - no drop ins -surfer on the wave has the right of way. thus if you're coming out look wtf you're going and get out of the way or have it happen to you next wave.coming in on a wave its all yours just don't run anyone over. what else?

Even though I totally agree on all your points, I had to laugh out loud (well not loud butlaugh non the less) at the no drop in comment... often kiters are riding "waves" no higher than head high in onshore winds ... can hardly call that dropping in on a wave more like dropping in on whitewash slop.

From a personal point of view – if its crap conditions.. Under 1 meter onshore.. I don’t think right of way rules riding waves apply… Come on who are you kidding to think your surfing! (yourself)

Cross offshore 2 meter and higher waves and now we are talking about dropping in - barrels and having a nice sesh. .. btw I might sound like I can surf - Well from a purist perspective I cant... But keep it real hey!

The east coast has the best waves for everything and the best looking chicks by a million miles. All kiters, especially the noobs go there NOW!

hint: the gold coast isn't that crowded as most of the "surfers" there never take their boards to the beach.

IMO
wind and power assisted craft to stay clear of paddle ins (unless you are very proficient) - this means poleys, "the poor mans tow in" (kiters)and jetski towins

does that sound biased at all?

refer to Tribal Law rules MR and various other threads on these forums.
