I'm planning a trip to Autralia starting in Novemembe with my first stop being the west coast. I would like to work for the first 4-6 months and i am hoping to find a job in a local kite shop. I'm most familar with Naish, Slingshot and North gear so i would like to work somewhere where i can sell these brands. Can anybody recommend a place to check out anywhere outside of Perth???

Much better hope getting a labouring or other type of work. try for something that keeps the arfternoon free as that is when the wind blows ie depends what your skills are but waiter, kitchen etc at nights might suit (however this is when the alcohol and women are about)

Good luck, you will love the wind over here. Just a word of advice, kiters are friendly over here, ask them about local rules and they will only be too happy to help you. there are places that kiting is banned. Most of us try to do the right thing to protect our access to the beaches and to protect other water users. Do the right thing and you will make lots of friends, do the wrong thing and people will accuse you of being a Yank and try to punch you.

Not only will you be referred to as a "Yank",most of the time you will be known as the "sceptic tank" ( A particularly odorous in ground toilet composting kind of thing)

unfortunately you Canadians and Americans all look the same to Aussies ! Just like Chinese !

I completely understand the value of talking to the locals and your "poor opinion" of americans. I grew up and currently live in a ski town close to the US board and almost every single backcountry rescue or dangerous avalanche release I have seen or been a part of in our area has been american tourists who choose not to talk to or listen to locals.

Talkig with locals is very important with everything you do no matter where you go or who you are with. I will definately be talking with you guys before i even set foot into the water because i know next to nothing about the ocean, your conditions and all the gnarly sea creatures that want to take a bit out of me.

What is the employment market like over there right now anyway. Here in Canada we have a major shortage of everything so you can't even walk down the street without getting offered a job. Is Australia in a similar boom, or not so much???

Hey Sanamarco,

If you have a work permit and want to work in the mines, they are paying upwards of $100K for almost any unskilled position.

Cray fishers are also hungry for deckies, as their usuals have gone up to the mines.

Lots of legitimate work around.

Cheers and enjoy our shores,

if you really aren't co-ordinated to use any tools, a lot of english backpackers tend to work as fruit pickers, or stick picker-upers for fruit farmers. Pay is absolutely crap, but i think they give you accomodation, ... and water.

However, sounds as if you can kite so the above shouldnt apply.

As far as working in a kite shop, I can think of less kite shops than i have fingers around Perth. There may be more, but I have seen any advertising for jobs in any of them lately.

Like Wal269 said, if you can use a trowel or put two bricks together with some mortar, the building industry IS booming and those bastards are earning as much as lawyers these days, and its on an upward spiral due to shortage of brickies, sparkies, whatever else theyre called.

Funny thing is, as soon as you meet the doctor, you wont want to work anymore 8).

robbo.

Well, back in canada i am a mechanical engineer, but i really don't want to have to use those skills. I've never done any "physical labour" so i am interested in giving that a shot for a while. But i would much rather work with people so we'll see what i come up with.

I am very excited to meet the doctor. I have heard so much about him and it is the main reason i am planning on spending the summer in WA. Whatever work i do find, i will need to be off at about 2:00pm everyday, or only work 3 days a week. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

As a Backpacker the best way to save money is fruitpicking.
U get accomodation und sometimes food for free and u work all day for a few weeks, so u dont spend any money while u stay on the farm.
But you can also do normal labouring Jobs in Perth, like Gardening, Cleaning, Car Washing, Kitchenhand, Removel, Construction....stuff like that.
Pay is arond 15-19 $ per hour.
