i was out in drenching rain couple of days ago in low end wind for the kite i was using. The wind died and i hang around a bit in the rain. Wind picked up to what it had been but kite wouldn't relaunch. Wind picked up more and got the kite up but it was struggling. Finally gave up

I'm guessing the rain had added a bit of extra weight that means you need to factor in a few extra knots for low end wind? it was 17m zephyr so fair bit of canvas

Yep, definately a weight increase issue.

Also the density of the air changes when there is moisture around but I would say your main problem was the weight factor.

I had a kite recently get dumped in the surf near the beach and got sand washed onto it.

Once I relaunched with a bit of sand caked on it, it flew like a pig.

Had to drop it, walk it out to the water and wash the sand off and then she flew fine again.

Just to clarify, were you trying to fly a 17m kite while a storm was coming in?

If so, be very careful as the wind could pick up significantly in a matter of seconds and this will cause you a "mary poppins effect" which would essentially be a scenic flight over the bay.

17m kites should stick to a gentle and predictable seabreeze on a summers day as storm fronts are un-predictable in wind magnitude.

... I was on holidays in Vietnam a few years ago during their wet season when a rain storm came through that was soooo heavy (we get big storms in Darwin but this was incredible) and it dropped visability down to about 50m and the water looked like the inside of a cave with millions of stalagmites everywhere, or the surface of some comet. The kite flew with a huge wobble in the bar with each sweep. The cool thing was the wind got steady, albeit light, and the freaky looking water with rolling swell underlying! I've kited many storms but this was something else!

The other cool thing, I had a white canopy Rhino with blue leading edge and struts and with the background of super heavy rain, the kite looked like the a skelaton of struts and leading edge only, I couldn't really see the canopy. Optical illusion but way cool.

Anyway,

cheers,

Robbie

The water temp will reduce pressure in the bladders especially if there is a big difference between air temp & water temp.
If you have low pressure to start with and dunk the kite in the water, sometimes turns the kite into a jelly fish.

Hey! Don't you go making sense with your "science" !!!

I bet you're one of those people that subscribe to the theory of gravity!

yes you need a few knots more in the rain. i do plenty of rain days per year. but usually 20+ knots so kites are powere. the tin makes little difference

I find the older the kite, the worse its affected by a soaking....
My first kite(after a year of lots of use) would truck along but as soon as id drop it in the piss it would take a snooze on the beach...
