Will I need a wetsuit in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney (basically everywhere) by April. I know I wont in January but will I later on?

Yes, you'd be really lucky to get from January through April without needing a wetsuit, especially in Sydney and Melbourne. But what you'd use in Canada would probably roast you here. You should probably plan on picking up what you need when you get here.

(Also, if you're going to visit Perth don't leave it until the very end of your trip. It would be a huge waste to go after the sea breezes are over.)

Mathias, Perth can get pretty cold in June and July but I think you'd still be cooking in a 6mm wetsuit. It would certainly be a novelty. Maybe someone from Perth could give you more info.

Hey Mathias,

I surf through the winter in Perth and down south occassionally and only really need a 3/2 steamer.

if you need any more than that, put a radiator on under the steamer and you'll be sorted. It's usually my hands and feet that get too cold in mid winter with the rest of it being OK.

In late summer I wear a 2x2 long sleeve shorty which is a bit of overkill, but I like it for sun protection as well.

in summer I just ride in a rashy and boardies mainly for rash protection and sun block.

See ya on the water,

par: When do the sea breezes typical start slowing down in WA?

Would a 3/2 be plenty for Sydney,Melbourne?

Does anyone know a site with wind statistics for Australia?

Thanks

Wind Stats for Australia : www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/wind/wrselect.shtml

Wetsuit will be needed in Melb by April. Hell it could be needed in January in Melbourne. A shorty would probably get you through, although if you plan to go in the ocean as opposed to the bay, a 3/2 steamer would be ample.

Sea breezes start to die off in late Feb, by mid march it is totally random
