I asked this question a while ago and got a mixed response so I was still confused.

First the facts:

I weight 90kg,
I am a total beginer, having had only two lessons .
I will be buying a Peter Lynn Venom kite.
I will be flying off either Wellington Point or Redcliffe/Brighton in Brisbane.
I will be getting some more lessons once I have bought my kite.

Now the questions:

1. What size kite should I buy, since I can only buy one at this stage - should it be a 13m, 16m or a 19m Venom?

2. What size board should I buy, or should I make a bigger plywood board ( as per various websites) for learning only buying one when I'm good enough? All I want to learn on it is to stand up and ride upwind.

Sorry for the re-post, but last time I got such varied responses that I would have to basically buy all three Since then, I've not had time to even think about kite surfing but now I do.

The replies you got last time were pretty sensible.

Will you end up with 2 kites?
If so, 19 and 13.
If not, 16.

There have been some good deals on secondhand V1's lately.

Boardwise probably 140 - 150 size. Again, good deals secondhand.

To open another can of worms, what about a 13m Flysurfer Pulse

Ian,

i weigh 90kgs also & have a Venom 13. don't know much about the wind range where you will be kiting, but over here in Perth, when there is some wind, for my skill level, weight & wind, the 13 rocks.

I weigh 75 kilo, and if I were flying in QLD i'd be on the 19v
more days for your kite. QLD is nowhere near as windy as WA.
I teach on venoms and in Newcastle and can handle the 19 up to low 20"s which might suit you. therer is lot's of depower so look more at the low end of your areas wind range

most wello kiters have 2 or 3 kites

most common sizes in lei for your weight would be 12+16m

13, 16 or 19, that's the basics of the problem:

19m - too big and likely to kill me if even a small gust comes up, or just right for the wind range we get here.
16m - right for only medium winds, but I since I don't know the winds here. From what I have seen, we get either lots of wind or next to no wind, so it might be not much use up here.
13m - right to learn with on a big board in medium winds, but no use in light wind and I'm too scared to try learn in 25+ knots at the moment.

What is the equivalent LEI size for a 16m Venom? My instructor said I should start on a 13m LEI with a 155 board, but she did not know anything about ARC's other than they "look cuddly" lying on the beach. Would that be the equivalent to a 16m Venom?

understand that as kites get bigger you get diminishing returns. sometimes a 3 or 4m difference in kite size will only get you an extra couple of knots - this is because kites generate power by movement, and bigger kites tend to fly like slugs. one of the main reasons a lot of us like bigger kites is we can ride lit in less than 20 knots, not necessarily for puttering around in 10 knots. for example my 18m works best for me in 15-20 knots, because i like lots of power. but at the same time I can stay upwind on my 12m with a larger board.

as for the power of your venoms - you should ask this question on the arc users forum. typical winds at wello 15-20 knots, quite a few nice 20-25 knot days as well. lots of 0-10 knots days i suspect for a one kite quiver the 16 or the 19 will be your best bet, but i dont fly dooners, only sleep in em

I gather from your post that you had lessons on lei's and not on the venom?
test one out before you by...
by the way, the 19 isn't a dangerous beast.
16 venom= 14 lei

I will reconfirm my previous recommendation of getting a 16m venom. Have heard the VII 16m is better than the VI. (Personally have only flown an 8m VII so can't comment on the VII's much at the moment).

Just go out a get it Iain, you're acting like an inflatable rider worrying about what kind of kite you're going to get. You've made the most important decision (fly an arc), now just get one!

cheers

I missed your earlier post. I would recommend the V16 and about a 1.5+ twintip. The 16 will give you the best usable wind range for your first year and probably a lot longer. Venoms are much less likely to scare you the same way an LEI can, just remember to let go of that bar when you fall off and let the kite go safely to overhead! You don't need 3 kites. You WILL need a shorter board later on as you improve but DON'T start on one! A Venom has a 15 knot wind range which will cover you for a long time to come. You'll need about 14knots minimum.

Call me anytime (days) on (08)9387-5676 for a chat..... no strings..........

all the best

Hi Ian

Missed you first post on this but I would have said get the 16M V2 or a V1 one if you can find a good used one.
The Venoms are slightly less powerful per size than the average C shaped inflato apprx 10-15% less.
So a 16v is going to be equivalent to a 14ish C shaped kite.

If you are only going to get one kite for now, get the size that will suit winds in the 10/12 - 20/25 knots range. Round where you are you get plenty of days with those winds. You will alwasy eb able to pick up other kite sizes as your skill and experience develop, then you will know what you want too.

What you would be better off doing is having 2 boards, you could make them both, make one buy one, whatever, but a board around 1.40m for stronger winds and a bigger board around 1.60M x 45cm wide will be your best friend when the winds are 10-15 knots.

If you want a quote on a V2 please contact me.

Mate, check out the arcusers group on yahoo. There is heaps of info there. Also you will find heaps of guys that can give you advise on your kite.

The following is a model of the arc wind range for PL kites

Yea I think all replies are pretty consistent:
if you have the cash get a V19 and a V13
if not get a V16... you'll save $$ but loose a few knots on low and high end.

I am expert and have been on V19 20m lines up to 30knot gusts without getting destroyed (surviving not really enjoying)... so wind range is huge but only if you know what you are doing.

Based on the advice and the wind range here, I think I'll go with the V19 and V13.

I'll start with a V13 - the wind range looks quite big, and look at buying a V2-19 for summer.

Now I got to get a board

Bear in mind the wind is stronger in summer.
You might want the V19 for winter.

Yepppers

Iain.. Welcome to Wello mate

TIP : Kiting at wello, welcome to the world of booties... Buy a pair and never forget them... ever lol

Iain... For your weight, if you go with the 13m and a 130-140 board for 18 to about 24/25 knots. The 16m with the same size board for 14-17 knot winds.

If you had to resort to the one kite size, I would go with the 16m (14 pumped) because that will at least get you out up to a MAX 17/20 knots depending on what you can hold, and if you have a smaller board (130/132).

The question about buying or making a board depends how competant you are at designing/ or making a board. If not made correctly it could hinder your learning stages, and you could encounter some problems. However, if you buy a quality kiteboard you can be garenteed that it will right like a kiteboard should.

With your weight you'll be able to hold the 16m up to way more than 20 knots, maybe not at first, but later on for sure.

Hi Elizabeth - I got a pair of booties before my first lesson at Wello, lots of sharpy things in the water there.

All going well, my kite will be here next weekend.
