Hi all,
Can you all give me some advice as to what the ettiquette is when this happens to you?
Riding at Brighton Le sands NSW from kite Beach. Winds are SE.
I'm going 30meteres from shore and am doing a down wind run as I have just entered the water and was going out.
Another kiter is going upwind and we are a safe distance apart, around 25-35metres. I drop my kite to ensure that we do not collide kites or with each other.
Suddenly the other kiter decides to JUMP and drifts directly into my path and I have to kick the board off so as not to injure him BUT my board collides with his.
Luckily my kite was low and his relatively high the lines do not tangle.
He apologises and we drift apart. I continue to ride a bit pissed at his reckless behaviour.
After finishing my session and putting away my gear I notice that the board has suffered impact damage.
So my Q is, what should I do if anything?
I only ask because if this were a boat or car accident, the person causing the damage would be responsible for the incident?
Your ADVICE ?

With what you have said he was in the wrong. If he is any kind of descent person he would at least apologise face to face.
Good point though on who pays the damage..

don't just put you kite low when you see an unknown approaching kiter upwind.
run away downwind and fast!!!
especially when they look a little edgy on the trigger finger.

You can bring it up later on in a light manner, agro won't work. at least it might highlight the nature of their manuvere.
On the bright side, better your board than your legs (or 1-1/2 ft higher), could have been far worse (boards are replaceable.

You know what, I don't think he was a kook, just a reckless rider.
Trying to show off stupidly.
Now that I think about it, I should have gone down wind FAST.
BUT what of the Damage?
I know the board was replaceable and all but I didn't cause the carnage and why why should I have to pay for the repair ? JUST sucks.
I know of the rider and have seen him before. Just couldn't catch up with him tonight as it was dark and he'd already left.
What would you do ?

This type of incident (board damage thru collision) occurs to surfers all the time.
Stuff happens.
Get over it.
It's a cruel sea, man.

Make him pay - accidents happen and when they do we need to just get over it. but if he's being an idiot then punish him.
if he wont pay up tell us who he is so we can give him what he deserves.

Can someone please post the general rules of the road so that us kooks know what they are.
I so far have assumed that if I am going downwind keep the kite low and upwind keep the kite high if there are other people in the way. Is this right?
Are there any other rules, like does the down wind person generally give way as the have more options???

I thought the guy with his right hand at the front of the bar has right of way generally.
But rule of thumb is if you see a nutter charging hard about to boost in front of you save yourself and get the hell outta the way then have a friendly quiet chat afterwards.

Well i beleve it would be directley to sailing.
This is taken from the IKO web site
? When two riders converge: the rider going starboard (kite right-hand side) has right of way and the rider going port tack (kite left-hand side) must give right of way and pass downwind with his kite as low as possible. There is no particular reason for this rule, but it is already applied in all other sports and nautical activities.
Just some more info on right of way

except sometimes people use the going out has right of way, comming in gives way, unless the rider is riding a wave.

As on the road, the respect of a few priority rules makes it possible to ride without incidents. It's up to you to respect and inform the other riders of the following rules.
? The outgoing rider has right of way over the incoming rider: the wind is often more turbulent on land than on the water. The rider who is on land is the one more at risk, which is why he has the priority.
? When two riders converge: the rider going starboard (kite right-hand side) has right of way and the rider going port tack (kite left-hand side) must give right of way and pass downwind with his kite as low as possible. There is no particular reason for this rule, but it is already applied in all other sports and nautical activities.
? The rider going faster than another in the same direction must give way to the slowest rider: the one going faster is the one who has a global vision of the situation since he arrives from behind.
? The rider passing upwind (windward) from another kiteboarder must fly his kite overhead: the kiteboarder downwind (leeward) must pilot his kite as low as possible.
? The rider surfing a wave has the right of way over the one who is jumping or going in the opposite direction: when surfing a wave, the kite is less easy to pilot so there is less room for maneuvers. Nevertheless, the rule for the outgoing rider is applicable when the waves are close to the shore (shore break). In this case, the rider who is surfing will have to give way to the rider who is going out.
? Right of way must be given to other ocean users: kiteboarding is the latest nautical sport. It is not always well accepted and known by other ocean users. Kiteboard downwind to them.
? A rider must have a clear safety zone of 50m downwind because he moves downwind when he jumps: a rider must have a clear safety zone of 30m upwind to jump because the lines could touch the kite or the lines of another rider kiteboarding close by.

HL,
Funny but I don't think that violence will solve a accidental incident.
What I was after on this post as a Question is What should the appropriate thing to be done?
Seek some form of compensation for the damage to my board or let things be? I'm pretty sure I had the right of way.
Thanks for the responses
I think I will try and talk to the rider and come to an agreement

Those rules are pretty much common sense. I am curious at what point does the outgoing rider loose this right of way, 30m- 50m from shore, 100m ? Brighton Le Sands can get pretty crowded

if not why worry ? board dings = more kudos!
its gonna happen one way or the other, id be more concerned with having a go at him about dangerous and/or inconsiderate riding.

I'd prefer the kudos to come from my riding and trying things rather than running into Dimwits.
I look after my gear in the hope of getting good resale value when looking to upgrade, that's why the issue is raised.
Who would buy a dinged up board ?
