Hey
I started kitesurfing just before christmas time and am loving it. I live on the Sunny coast and have a 12m Naish Torch and wiegh 60kg. Anyway i am considering getting a new kite soon but i dono what size to get becuase i dont know what sort of winds to expect after winter. Im not sure if i should get a larger or smaller kite (10 or 14) Is there a general trend or pattern of wind throughout the year? Any help would be much aprreciated so i get the right size kite and have more days on the water.

good winds

I don't know how genuine this post is seeing you and realplayer are having a nice dig at each other in another thread, but I'll take your word for it.

If you get a 10 or 14m, you are wasting your money as these kites are too close to the 12m you have. In general, you buy a kite you go up or down 2 sizes. aka if you have a 12m, you grab an 8 or 16m etc.

No one frankly knows what wind will be around during summer as this summer (05/06) was honestly very very sad compared to the previous summer (04/05) when I was just a spectator. The wind has become less predictable and just overall pretty yuck compared to previous years. If you want to be powered in 14-17 knots nicely, grab a 16m; however if you would rather get out in about 23-28 knots, take the 8m. Or preferably, get both

Goodwinds and happy choosing [}:)]

I wuld go smaller if anything. I think kites >12m are sluggish and the wind is not very consistent.I personally would have more fun being able to kite in 8m conditions than in 16m conditions. Some people would say if it ain't 12m weather i aint kiteboarding weather but 8m are a lot of fun when your more experienced.

16's are pigs... cant say i have ridden 16 torch 2 but i ride those kite and i have an 8 is awsome for its size really quik for its size and pretty grunty but depowers really well.. and the 14 is great for its size wont be as nice as the 12 but as far as 14's go i rate it... if the wind is gusty go the 14 if it is consistant light go the 16.. 14 is easy to relaunch compared to the 16

Hey
Thanks for the help people. Elizabeth this is a genuine topic, me n realplayer are mates and were just fooling around. i got him hooked on the sport . hope u dont get the wrong impression. Im sort of considering a 16 now cos there is alot of light wind days around here...........but then an 8 would be good when the wind is pumping. Arghh the choices.

I find it's a lot harder to not put up a kite if it's really windy, than it is if there's not much wind. (if that makes sense) For example i won't really go to the beach if there's not much wind but if i do and there isn't enough wind, i know it will probably suck putting up a kite so i won't. But if it's really nukin and it's all happening, i found it hard to say, "My kite is too big for these conditions so i won't put it up".

i.e i think it's a good idea to have a small kite that you can put up when it is really windy.

I think first prize would be to get both wouldn't it? So which one first. I'd say on the Sunshine Coast in summer or winter you'll kite more days if you have a 16 and a 12 than if you have an 8 and a 12.

Hahaha classic mate... Sounds like someone wants to sell a certain kite of theirs. I am 52kgs and I use my 16m in 14-17 knots and it's perfect, that means you with a 16m and your weight you will be perfect for 15-17/18 knots depending on board size. An 8m is perfect for anything above 23 kntos for you. Buuuuttttt, get back to me on what you buy and what you find out for the sizes depending on the wind. lol [}:)]

hey elizabeth
Thanks for the help but i dont realy understand why u would use a 16m in 14 - 17 knots. Im powered well on my 12m from 12 - 20 knots so it would sort of be pointless getting a 16 then. I thought a 16 would get me out in like 7 to 14 knots or something.
