Firstly please note - I have been kiting for 7-8 years, have had plenty of experience in gusty, squally fronts.

What about lightning? Flying a kite in the ocean in a thunderstorm is suicidal.

So how do you know if there is going to be thunder and lightning. I'm really keen to go out now at Leighton but I'm worried about lightning. They've predicted a thunderstorm, but will it eventuate?

keep your eyes open all around.
You'll be right.

Bit onshore and straight at Leighton tho.....
Try cables instead you got a bit of room there when its onshore.

If you connect a long antenna to your harness you will know if a thunder will hit that area before everyone else.

Any other scientific questions please do not hesitate to ask on the forum or personally contact me.

Use the Rain radar.

Looked at radar this morning - at 10:30 looked like there was 2hrs or so clear

Got out at cott around 11:15.

Used a 6m - was fun - but the wind could do with a bit more south in it (kept getting pulled off the frothy waves by the strong direct onshore westerly).

I use it heaps too, it at least lets you know when the rain is going to hit, which is often accompanied by squally winds and sometimes lightning in the real dark patches.
Hasn't been too flash today though, the fronts just keep coming, and it has been a bit too direct onshore.

When not to kite??
....when a front is bout to be right on top of you and the 30knot of wind becomes 44 and it takes 2 guys to hold the kiter down and me to belly-flop on the wildly jumpy kite...
haha was so worth it today... tho a brown wet suit may be needed by many of us for these occasions... hahaha (jus jokes)
