Dunsborough is problematic -

The prevailing winds are SW (the seabreeze) and E. The SW gets blocked badly by Cape Naturaliste and the E comes across land and is fickle/onshore-ish. One needs either a N or NE and that's pretty rare.

There are often guys out at Busselton but that too suffers from the wind problems of Dunsborough but not as bad.

There are plenty of spots from Yallingup down with more sea breeze then you will know what to do with but all have issues:

- truly wild
- no-one out
- due to the nature of the launch spots in bays and coves, there are issues with wind shadowing and strong currents.
- the swell can get quite big once you get out a bit.

There is an instructor who runs a school out of Margaret River, it's pretty easy to find his details, he may be able to give you some better idea of where to go.

Cheers.

Laurie aint joshin.

There are (apparently) some user friendly spots but generally the wind, waves, shadows and other hazards are significant so it pays to play it safe or go with good advice for the conditions on any given day.

Good luck

dunsborough is very fickle but can have reasonably good east, south east winds generally early, all over by mid day. saturday just gone however it was cranking all day but gusty early. I normally go the 14 here but was over powered with a 10, most guys were riding 7's.

laurie is spot on, its a mixed bag. if you want flat water, dunsborough is flat (ish) but I would say drive to augusta ! (south east, usually 20+ knots) small waves in the bay if you want it or glass in the river. if you want waves, check the west side but look for kites, unless your super confident and fit dont go it on your own.

if your still unsure, as laurie said, contact simon (margaret river kite and sail), great guy and always happy to help out.

good luck and enjoy !
