Hey Guys and Girls,

I'm moving to the Southern US next week and hoping to find a few great Kiting spots. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm moving to Alabama (near the Gulf Of Mexico) so looking more at Florida, Alabama or Mississippi, but western spots would be good too, as I'm bound to be going to California and Texas at some stage :)

Cheers,
D

Hi there

We just relocated to Houston from Qld about 3 months ago. We had a bit of a look around when we first got here and there are a few good spots in Texas. Corpus Christi is a great spot, has been good constant wind everytime we have been there, 9 different spots and shallow, flat water. The Velocity games will be held there 26-29 May and includes the USA kiteboarding championships.

Another good spot we found is South Padre Island but it is a bit of a hike, right near the Mexican border, about 6hrs drive from Houston. All the local kiters have been really friendly and give helpful advice specific to each area. Haven't been out of Texas yet, but hope to make it to Florida sooner or later. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I took 4 months off from work to go kiting, and was in WA Jan/Feb and Texas (South Padre Island) during Mar/April. I think, over the course of 7 weeks I was in SPI, there must have been less than 5 non-kiteable days. It was awesome.

And, super-warm: water mid-twenties, air about 30. Kite size for me was almost always either 9 or 11 - which is interesting to compare to WA which was 7 or 9.

More: in SPI you have the choice of either laguna with waist deep flat water for infinite distances, or, waves on the coast. It's fun to do downwinders on the coast, then land at one of the beach bars and take a 4$ cab back up to your car. Did that a bunch of times.

Been to Corpus a number if times, it's pretty good as well.

Florida, went to Uni there, I would not go there for a "kite-only" vacation; the wind is just not that reliable as it is in Texas.

And Texas, well, it's Texas. I liked it.
