aah, whitehaven,
what a great spot for the cruising yachtman and kiter.
with luck you will be blessed with fair breezes, clear water and i wish i was there now too.
make sure you walk up to the lookout above hill inlet for a photo opportunity, and don't land on the stingrays......

Hey greenleader, I take it you have been there in a boat.

Can you anchor in the inlet for the night? or does the tide go out to far?

Are there any other spots wurth visiting for kiting?

We are hireing a sailing cat, so we will be limited in where we can go

i dont think you can achor at whitehaven but you can not far from it, i hired a 42' catamaran from sunsail for 3 days for $1400 (have to know the right people), slept 10 so was well worth it, too bad i didnt kite back then, would have been good.

well wdric,
where do i start, anchor in tongue bay just to the north (around the headland)a great calm spot to sleep, chill, fish and take in the serenity, except if a backpackers yacht anchors next to you!(rare) anyway make sure that you take a rod and some mackeral lures because you should troll as you go around the corner each day for the kiting fun. we caught spaniards, tuna and barracuta. great fun!
hill inlet offers nice flatwater and whitehaven itself has even a little swell to play with at times. hope the trades blow for you.
best regards ian

I went their a couple of years ago on one of the big boats with about 300 other people and could see boat mast up the inlet so I am guessing at high tide you can go up there.

You can share your friend at sunsail if you like as I havn't booked yet and am hopping to get something cheaper on standby rates. I checked it out this time last year and there was at least 30% of most of the chater companies boats still available.

wdric, we saw small boats and cats cruise up hill inlet at high tide, but it all seemed a bit of a long navigational task if you want to get out and about, not to mention the midgies.

I went on a live aboard set up by Traqua back in May 2004. The boat anchored on the North side of the Island to stay sheltered from the Southern trade winds. A couple of larger backpacker boats also stayed the night there but we were there for 4 nights.
Here are 3 pages of pics that I took.
It is a great location but a storm front can change or kill the wind conditions very quickly.

Make that 144 hours of wind with 98% between 20 & 30 knots

I can't believe the wind here, it blows day and night, I started this thread to get a bit of feedbaack on the area.
It just goes to show that the guys from central QLD must get a lot of time on the water this time of year.

Hi there,
I worked on the boat that did the kite tours to Whitehaven, your best bet is to anchor in tongue bay unless winds are coming to much from the east, if you have a shallow cat you can drive up into the inlet and park behind the sand bank but take your insect repellent, the best time to kite is on the outgoing tide as it can whip up some really nice little ramps, if the wind is coming to much from the south and you are finding it a bit to gusty sail up to langford spit, it will take half a day to get there but is an epic spot. while on land make sure you get to conway beach, in low tide it has a flat water lagoon just dont go to far into the river mouth unless your sure the crocs have been well fed. have fun

Hi I took a 40 ft bavaria there anchor tongue bay take gear by tender to beach walk over to hill inlet about 10 minutes. I have kite surfed there quite a few times, best place around the islands, open to south winds. Lots of marine life though eg small and meduim sharks in the inlet good luck and enjoy
