I just had a meeting with the organisers of the Wind Jam and it was decided to cancel the event for 2004, as insurance could not be obtained economically.

It is intended that Wind Jam will happen again next year, provided the insurance issue can be resolved.

Thanks,

Ian

comps are over-rated :P

but nothing has matched the party of last year's windjam. Spewing it won't be on this year.

Rotto was cancelled because WAKSA did not have the capacity to run it and the Nats in the same season. AKSA was not keen on it being run as part of the Nats.

"Bad news..... The AKT (was AKL) is not going ahead. After a huge effort to try to get a major sponsor we haven't been able to secure the seires financially and as a result it has been called off.

I hope this hasn't upset your travel plans and its not too late to
rebook any flights.

Its very disappointing and was a truly last resort option.

Sincerest apologies,

Mike Walker"

Re insurance and any events at Woodies incl "casual" comps - you need to get permission from CALM and DPI - they will tell you what their insurance requirements are. In the case of Rotto Classic in March 04 I can tell you that the authorities were provided with a copy of the AKSA policy and were happy if all riders were current AKSA or WAKSA members.

this may lead to underground comps ? or disclaimers preventing all who compete from taking any action against the organisers and/or the council residing over the area in which the event is held... I personally think the later is not a bad idea as anyone who kites know's the risk and is stupid to think other wise...

There's only one way to run a competition in this State. It's quite simple, you ask for the local councils event package....fill it out and meet all evacuation plans/contingencies.

Meet DPI requirements

Involve all emergency services.

Get sponsorship to cover LEGAL infastructure from the local community.

Walla! Competition!.

Usually put aside about 8-12 months work
Oh, and I forgot about six million other things and about 40+ people to help.

people+planning+time+patience=success

so then.... whats the difference between, a group of 20 of us going for a kite at the same spot one week, and then the next week, the same 20 people haveing a comp there? is it just basically we can tell other people to leave aqs we have permission t o be there vs, just being there?

Mate, if you can get 20 people together in one spot then that's great, that's what it should all be about.
Unfortunately you need a bit of infastructure thought to ensure that those 20kiters+ girlfriends/wives/kids/spectators put their rubbish in the bin, leave the place as they found it, don't upset the local dog walker and that means a bit more thought and planning than just getting a few crew together.

Having said all that the next comp that I run after the Nationals will be an invitational....raw, secret and proffessionally filmed. No hoopla, just kiting, judged by the kiters.
