How was the wind drop yesterday,

sorry i am not sufficiently technically minded to attach the WA mtro graph but i was very well powered with my 8m (full depower on the strap),went out the back and wind died before i could head back to the beach!!!!!

Had to work the kite mad to get back in and actualy body dragged the end

No drama but i thought that it was pretty impressive watching it drop sooo fast.

Anyone else got in the same situation?

Yeh, Powered up - then big hole. Really struggled to get back in. I don't know why. It just didn't seem like a "proper" seabreeze to me. Maybe the trough had something to do with it

Yeah,

Whats up with the wind in your area? Pinnaroo nuked until after dark. I rode until 7.15 and was lit on the 7m Rebel boosting some nice jumps

i thought the wind yesterday was sensational. I got to test a bunch of kites and boards in great conditions.

Good winds, (at least at Pinna's)

If you look at yesterdays wind charts they are quite interesting (well to nerdy fellows like me anyway). Yes nuking up north until after dark but check out Safety bay and then Mandurah - different scenarios toward the end of the day - wind started later and dropped earlier.

I'm still developing an understanding of the mysteries of the wind goddess. Can you explain this one to us mere mortals Laurie?

One strange thing I experienced yesterday as the wind dropped, was the wind on the water seemed to be blowing in a slightly different direction to the wind up where my kite was. So my usual approach of judging where to put my kite based on the surface wind was wrong. Wind was slightly offshore up high but cross shore down low. Possible?

Hey Darren,

You should take off your sunnies if you were kiting after dark at 7.15pm because cause we were on the water at 8pm and it wasn't fully dark.

I wouldn't expect much difference in the weather patterns from Scarborough to Pinnaroo?????

We will have to pay you a visit and rock up to your spot again soon

I heard that we can demo the new north rebel, too poor to buy one but would love a demo

Yeah have had that once when the wind went from "I think I am a bit overpowered to holy crap my kite just fell out of the sky,to off shore ,all in about 10 seconds."

I was in close but the other guy kiteing was about 300m out trying to swim in with all his kit with a light off shore , no ground made, gotta love that lifesavers now have jetskis on the beach.

Yesterday was a classic battle of the gradient wind versus the seabreeze. It's been awesome watching as the trough develops from up north how each day the seabreeze has been getting later, and not even coming in at some locations.

With the right gradient behind it (i.e. new high cell forming), the seabreeze is can be nuclear, but with an opposing gradient wind, it either stops it (=this weekend) or limits how far it travels inland, if at all.

More here:
www.seabreeze.com.au/info/wind.asp

Read the above, and next time you look at the 7 day forecast graph, click on it and it will take you through to the synoptic .. you'll soon get the swing of knowing what kind of seabreeze you're in for..

I think the explanation lies on a more local scale.

There's mention in the article about a seabreeze front which sweeps inland when the river was still.

Imagine if there was an easterly that day.
As the land warmed up, that would be directed upwards and 'suck' the cooler air in from the sea.
Where the two meet would be the front.

If the front is inland to you, you'll say 'seabreeze'.

What's happened, is that front was just inland that day and then it shifted further out to sea. (It isn't a straight line up-down the coast either, hence better seabreezes on different parts of the coast)

Check out yesterday's graphs for Perth! That front sat in between Rotto and Swannie / Ocean Reef between about 4-7pm (but was non-existent OR west of Rotto at other times). The easterlies blew that rising hot air out to sea before it could go upwards properly.

Also, don't think of these winds as linear / solid masses. Air and water movement is always 'swirling'. Think of those old pictures of clouds with faces blowing at each other!

Hence the front is actually the point above the water (or land) that the winds swirl upwards. Winds before this point could be moving faster than how fast the point / front is actually advancing - and should, if the point is to actually advance.

The front is just the point of 'equilibrium'. Where there is a nett zero horizontal wind result.*

And it's a tall swirling front too, not just a 10ft one on the surface of the water / land!

*We generally don't care about the vertical movement of wind, unless it's a cyclone / water spout / Eric situation
