I'm planning to make a post in the windsurfers buy sell section. I'm hoping to pick up a batton to cut down for my Farc when I arrive in Sydney.
How are Kiter / Windsurfer relations Down Under? Should I avoid posting on their side? Anyone in Sydney with a batton I can scoop??!!

Relations are good I would say, I saw one windsurfer out on the weekend between 30 kiters, he looked a bit lonely and hunched over though as everybody was launching around and over him. I felt quite sympathetic.

Hey Turkey,

I think it depends upon the state you are in and also the beach you choose to kite at.

In general I think relations between the two are of begrudged acceptance at busy beaches and "live and let live" at less crowded places.

Many windsurfers now kite as well as pole so you shouldnt have too much problem posting on their site.

To keep improving relations, always show respect to each other and lend a hand if you can when needed. Know the rules of the local spot and be courteous, especially if it is a sailboarding predominant location like Margies or Gnaraloo.

There are always the militant disrespecting few on both sides of the fence, just accept their perspective and then politely wish them a good day

Good luck to you

I'll be booking a lesson with Kitepower when I get there. Maybe I'll try to contact them online.

We will have anything you could need to fix any kite, so if you are coming for a lesson just bring the kite in question with you.

Kiters and windsurfers don't mix much in Sydney, we tend to use different launches. The ones I have met are cool, they hold the fomula champ opposite my shop every year and lots of those guys come over for a look or some parts, which we are starting to stock.
WA is the only place where I have witnessed a bit of aggro, but mostly relations are cool there too.

piss off pete...

I can have my opinions about windsurfers, my dad is one.

I have been purposely run over by an agressive windsurfer, I think that I am allowed to dislike them rather than listen to your comments.

In fact some of my best mates are windsurfers so i guess i dont hate them all.

The purpose of my post is not to have a slag at windsurfers but rather to give a alternate perspective to other posts and that windsurfing and kiting relations aren't that good in some places.

I think from personal experience my point is valid.

Hey Steve / kitepower Sydney.
Can you please email me at [email protected] I have a few questions and don't want to waist space on the forum. I'll be seeing you 1st week of November!!!
I'm sort of sorry I opened the windsurfer wound. We have seperate launches and try to share space without getting in each others face. I understood that Pole surfing died in the 1900's?

Hey Guys,
In my humble experience, the only negetive comments from either side of the fence come from those who have not done both sports with any earnesty.

If you had done both, you would firstly have earned the right to at least make a comment, and secondly would have realised that both sports are cool. Optimum conditions for sailing and kiting are around 25 knots side shore in waves or 25knots in flat water if thats your thing.

It is a different skill set and both are worth learning, even speed sailing on dead flat water is as much fun on a sailboard as it is on a kite.

It takes a lot more skill to be competant on a sailboard, especially on a wave or freestyling and if you saw modern supercross expression sessions on a sailboard you would trip out! It kinda makes kiting look lame!

Lets keep these threads open only to people who have done both sports that way they wont ever start because those who have ridden both dont bag one or the other.

Sorry Uminaboy, but your post is lame ... or should I say Gay?

Good winds to all, Sail or Kite!

I understand after this, why you wouldn't want to help another kiter again or pick up one of their boards because of a kiters responce on here has ticked you off, but that doesn't mean you can't still help those who respect windsurfers and others... I think there are good and bad sides to both kiting and windsurfing, and I think both are a great sport for two different reasons... I know if I lost my kiteboard or any equipment I would be more than greatful to receive it back

I agree with Elizabeth! (i love windsurfing and don't kitesurf, but think it looks like a great sport). There are clearly some people, on both sides, that really need to get over themselves!!!!!

Don't let the negative comments of a minority (from either side of the fence) put you off helping each other out. We rescued a kiter yesterday who couldn't relaunch his kite and was stuck a long way offshore, drifting to Kwinana with it getting dark - I'd be happy to do the same again and I'm sure that there are many kiters who would help me out if I was stuck.

kiters/windsurfers

as a "poley" i generally like the idea of kiting. If I could double my funds I would perhaps do both. But between surfing, fishing and wavesailing I guess I also need more time. I would agree that generally the vibe is cool, with the odd exception.

My only question is this: Whats the deal with the boardshorts over the wetsuit thing? Am I living in the past, I don't really get it? Please explain

Got a question for ya uminabitch, what brought you to kiteboarding? You like showing off at the beach? U like to think of yourself as a hardcore boardrider??? And yeah please tell windsurfers to go back to their forum so u can talk **** behind their back!
Tell u one thing (mate), I had been windsurfing for 4 years before I started kiting, learned it in a week! wasn't hard I must say!!! but it was a lot of fun.
And if u consider windsurfing closer to boatsailing than boardriding, I think I can say that WE are proud of it, we are closer to the sea than u guys are.

Hey fashionvictim - I totally agree with you also- Both are great sports, and I think if kiters and windsurfer's can't get along, just leave each other along, because being hurtful won't make anything better!

The boardies over the wetsuit - For me, it's the fact that if you stack it , you're wetsuit's protected, and also the fact that a seat harness looks a whole lot better and is more comfortable with boardies on than without... For the guys it's pretty much a whole different reason, which is obvious mate...
