this is more kiter to kiter related and as already stated, its more about common sense, just because you have priority by the handbook doesn't mean your going to get it that way...

this is basically iko book stuff....

The rider that is leaving the beach has right of way over the rider that is traveling towards the direction of the beach. This is because the rider on the beach is seen more at risk than the inbound rider.

When two kiter's converge the rider who's right hand is forward (starboard) of the direction of travel has right of way over the kiter that who is coming from the other direction (port tack).

When passing each other the kiter upwind must place his kite high and the down wind rider must place his kite low (duh)

The kiter that is riding the wave has right of way over the kiter that is heading out the back. This takes precedence with kiting over starboard and port tack right of way rules.

so in a sw seabreeze in perth at ocean reef if your heading in you have right of way to the person thats heading out unless of course your on the beach about to start, then you have right of way

in a nw direction its the other way around, kiter heading out has right of way (unless other rider is on a wave).

in esperance in a se seabreeze the person heading in has right of way over the person heading out..

but my biggest peeve is riders that tailgate especially in decent sized surf.

Hey Stamp,

Sorry did not explain it correctly, basically I was heading towards shore (maybe 20-50m off backline) and I feel a tugging sensation on my bar. I looked downwind and a kiter is on my ass about to cut my lines in half.Obviously I responded nicely .

Either the guy has really bad peripheral vision or he did not see my kite (possible as I was using 20m lines) or he doesn't look forward when moving forward.

The thing is I think it was the same guy who cut me off at the beginning of the session, he looked like quite pro (I think I just answered my question - pro's have their own rules )

Cheers
Rich

Huh ??? Shoes ?? Huh ???
SPAMMER !!! Get out !!!
Re. Rights of Way...
It all gets too confusing when we have waves near the beach !!!
The bit most people seem to forget is the 'Show your intentions early' !!! Last second decisions is teh path to the dark side...
Lowering your kite tends to indicate that you will take the downwind route...
So look at what the approaching 'sailor' is doing - if they have more ability (and knowledge ?) they will probably make the decision for you, so pay attention, hand signals (no, not rude ones !!!) can also help show intentions if they miss that big kite being lowered in the sky !!!
Stay safe...

Most of it is common sense but a few points not mentioned:

1. When in doubt head upwind and slow down if a collision does occur that way it will not be serious.

2. If you decide to head downwind make a clear and pronounced bear off movement with your board to make clear your intent.

3. Only pass upwind of polers if you can clear 10m as your lines will be in the way, otherwise show him a clear intent that you are going to bear downwind.

4. having kited at dutch inn for many years amongst the dozens the polers I can say that they are getting better at co-existing as are the kiters. In the early days they would never pass anywhere beneath a kite fearing the thing would dive out of the sky and annihilate them at any moment. Consequently you'd see scared polers bear off miles away and then be pissed off that you made them lose ground downwind. Now they just hold their line and everyones happier. Also we are in total control only if not overpowered, so keep 'Macho' for the bedroom later and use a smaller kite.

5. Thank God for polers. It's alot easier to wave kite with 20 polers than 5 kiters, Polers exist in 2 dimensions. Kiters exist in 3. With kites, its the third dimension that fools you. If all the polers took up kiting everyone would be in trouble.

6. Hats are great at stopping sunburn, but great at causing kitemares. it puts a huge blindspot in a kiters upward vision so stay away from guys in hats .[and I'm one of them] and if you wear one make sure to look right up before turning or riding,

7. Don't jump in the path of anyone, airtime is a poorly controlled trajectory largely already decided at take off, and much as I admire Newbies trying desperately to show off their new found skills when ever an audience appears, the worst time to jump is when you are upwind of someone.

Not being picky or anything, but rule number one should be "never assume total control of the kite". There is not way we ever have total control. As we dont control the wind, the ocean, when a panel tears.

Most of the right of way rules are common sense. Imagine what the other person would want you to do, and do that. That way they might be more helpful/polite if there is an near miss.

Wow that's a bit much.

Happy to chat to Mr Hooper or Biagro on the beach if they think I have offended them, and apologies in advance if I have, as it was unintended.

Abusing people on a forum is all too easy particularly if you are choosing to remain anonymous. The subject was about right of way and I think its sad that you have nothing of greater value top contribute than personal abuse. Also against Laurie's rules lads so keep it clean or you'll be banned.

It's been said before but just to make it fresh.

Kurnell local rule. Kiters heading toward the beach have right of way. Those leaving the beach must wait. (I don't make the rules just observe local custom) Arguing with the locals is not an option.
