Yo!

This weekend looks like it's going to be hell windy, and plenty of kiters have been killed or injured in conditions like these. A kiter was killed at Rockingham,WA last year in a Northerly.

If you've not been on the water through winter before, be very careful of the way the winter weather behaves. Sometimes the eagerness to get out can override safety.

Sorry if this is a bit of a lecture, but I know I've stupidly gone out in insane conditions because I've been hanging out so long ... winter weather has taught many sailors respect the hard way. When a big black cloud full of rain is approaching the wind speed can nearly double in a very short time. I've experienced a increase from 30 knots to 40-50 knots at Dutch Inn.

The wind direction can shift rapidly.. Generally as it makes the transition from NW to SW .. sometimes it can take all day, sometimes it happens in 15 minutes - can catch you unawares!

Apart from that, on the right day, the conditions can be unbelievable - I've had some of my best days out during winter!

Have fun .. Laurie

Thanks for the warning there Laurie, definately not taken as a lecture and well worth saying at this time of year.

So can anyone suggest wherebouts would be a good spot for a strong N/NWly kite. I usually kite at Lucky Bay but I'm thinking there's plenty of obstacles and not much beach if I stuff up the launch in a hell wind, probably prefer somewhere with a wider beach. I've kited Cott last winter in a lighter NW which was good but I'm thinking maybe Leighton with the wider beach in a stronger wind. Any suggestions?

Has anyone kited Pinaroo in a NW, what's it like there?

Pinnaroo and Mullaloo arent too bad in a NW, still as choppy as ever tho. In winter Mullas has some OK waves. Pinnaroo still has a nice wide beach. Woodies would be good too.
