You know they're a kook when the kite is totally flared out when waterstarting(it's not a fricken handle, it's a supa-dupa joystick!!!!)They should install electric shock machines for bar pullers.

When their kite comes drifting down the beach at Pinnaroo and comes to a stop by enveloping you like a big bat-cape. Good thing it was us kiters and not an un-suspecting family with little kids. And it was the kite and not the lines...

You know they are kooks when you see two people both holding the kite to help launch.

When you see someone wearing a waist harness under their backside as if it was a seat harness .
Then wearing it under their armpits when they get overpowered.

when one minute they are sagely shouting out advice like this :

and the next they are telling tales of how they fly their kite down between trees because .... "THE WIND IS DROPPING"
OMFG do you believe that
And as if thats not enough here's the result - kook proof

My Moral - if your gonna learn from vids make sure you dont miss the one that shows you how to fly your kite safely between trees.

ps: wouldnt you hate to be the owner of a blue arc now.
Everytime you're out there everyones gonna be looking at you wondering if you're the who didnt need lessons.
(no disrespect here for PL arcs - great, safe kites when flown properly & Im sure Neil would never sell a kite without strongly advising lessons)

Ha ha, very funny. Point taken. So I ended up in a tree cos I didnt have lessons. Tell me, who teaches you how to stay out of trees anyhow? I want to book!

GOOD LAD - way to go.
Sorry sandgroper - Ive been taken the p!ss out of you all over the place today but nothing personal. Its just that you showed a classic 2 posts which highlight the need for all to learn properly.
We just gotta get the message to everyone that lessons not only protect you, our sport & the public but they will save U a sh!t load of learning time anyhow.
Anyone can end up in a tree anytime - even without breaking any of the rules. Its easily done. But the point here is you didnt know the rules and you (by your own admission) broke a few which put you there.

Suggest you visit www.waksa.org.au. There you will find a list of reputable kiteschools in Perth area along with that other essential piece of your new kite kit - a membership enrolment form.

Cheers & good (safe) kiting.
Say hi sometime if you ever see me round & I'll shout you a drink for being such a mean son-of-a-biatch [}:)]

I can see now that not having lessons is not something I should boast about. Its reckless for me to carry on like that. You're quite right. I've forgotten that the average person wont have my background.
It reminds me of when I nearly killed 2 friends in sperate incidents: 1 who tried to keep up with me in a car, the other who tried to keep up with me on a motorcycle. Both came to grief trying to imitate things I was already very experienced at. The latter had mild concussion and 2000km still to ride.

Since then I've always discouraged any kind of recklessness in motor vehicles. Obvioulsy I need to consider kiting in that league too.

Thanks for bringing me "back down to the ground".

Good man, humitlity is a true virtue, thumbs up.

For the others listening, lessons may not teach you common sense but they do teach you RISK ASSESSMENT. Like are there any hard objects downwind...

and how likely might you be to run into them .

gusty, dying wind with limited skills and experience

or

consistent, well powered wind with solid skills experience

can put solid objects the same distance downwind in whole different categories.

From a workplace health and safety perspective, risk = probability x consequence... Ohh crap I'm thinking work again, that's it I'm off to bed. Remember what I said Timmy...
