yesterday i was down at peli piont thinking to myself it looks a like to windy for my feeble ability . when i saw what can only be discribe as a comedy of errors .
there was one guy with a blue kite who had decided that the safest place for his kite was behind the second row of trees . i say the second row become on his first atempt he did not get it in far enough so proceeded to relaunch it from behind the first row and make a better job of it the second time .
the next scene started with a man that real did look the part set up his kite in front of two of his friend . then he launch his kite in the power zone getting flung 12 feet in the air and dragged up the beach and then when somebody finally caught the kite .he proceeded to pack up and go home .( good idea im thinking )
what makes this even funnier was that at the time there was a photogragher taking pics .i am thinking somebody should realy take a video camera down there this material is pure gold . i a sure you would win funniest home video .
there was a deeper piont to this thread which i was going to get into but i will end by saying GET SOME LESSONS your equipment will love you for it .

where are the more experienced crew to put these guys straight on what they,re doing? People need to get cool with helping each other to do things safely b4 **** happens, not after.
These stories aren't even a little bit funny anymore, they're really sad.
It's going to take an injury or worse to some member of the community for this sport to be banned at your local spot, no-one's laughing then

I have been kiting for 5 years and in this time as Pres of AKSA, and owner instructor in my own school, I have approached many people looking "a bit suss" with kites on the beach.

Mostly they will be defensive and more often than not aggressive if you ask them do they know what they are doing? I spoke to a group with an old kite at Scarbs the other week, looking very suss and not having a pump (rigging in the midst of the public) and queried them about the experience they had. I received aggressive spooked replys and told them of the dangers to the public and the power of the kite. They said they knew what they were doing and had flown before.

Later that arvo they launched, got thrown, dragged, spanked and tumbled before crashing the kite on the beach. They packed up and went home.

You have no legal standpoint to stop people from launching and people cannot be forced to take advice (unfortunately) So stupid will be stupid.

You can only make suggestions and hope they take the hint. If they dont, run and grab a video camera it's gotta be worth the $10K.

no no no! There is no-way anything funny about this situation! I have to agree 100% strong with the goofster, its only a matter of time b4 the sport will get banned from peli point if ppl dont start taking responsiblity for their actions.

Also kiters need to be considerate of the general public around them 2! Peli point is so close to foot paths and areas that the GP are always using, like its been said a trillion times, it will only take a major accident to see those who kite banned!
Kite Safe and responsibly

the regulars are leading by example! (go down and watch and you will see what i mean)

*** from peli point meeting last season (maybe we are due another dean?)

- DO NOT launch/land on around or over the path - the further you walk into the water the safer you are
- DO NOT leave gear unattended on the grassed area - rig up and launch or land and pack up
- DO NOT rig on the main access way of the beach
- keep the water near the launch/recovery area clear of kites
- DO NOT rig past the fence
- BE AWARE OF PUBLIC USE OF THE FOOTPATH!!!! - if you make someone walking along the path stop and wait for you to flap your big scary kite around their heads, YOU have done the wrong thing

a number of the things raised at that meeting are still simmering away in the background including signage, unfortunately theres a lot of red tape

watch the regular faces down at peli... almost everyone that comes down and has kited peli for a while is launching off the beach or in the water, rigs/packs their gear up fast and keeps the beach access clear.

the usual story goes ask for a launch and get all uptight and usually aggressive to the local that asks them if they have had lessons and know what they are doing, rig up over the top of everyone elses lines or on the bit of beach that EVERYONE has to use to land or launch, chat to their newb mates for an hour before actually moving their gear out of the way, launch too close to the waters edge, shoot their kite for the sky the second its in the air, if they survive the body drag at the trees walk about 10 m away from the launch and stand there with their kite at 12 waiting for the freak gust that puts them in the UWA carpark whilst fuming at all the kiters going past them because they are sitting right in the middle of the circuit and dont know it

people can up date it each day esp after a good blowy sat or sun

i dont understand why the council doesnt like signs which would make stuff safer.

they have em in Geraldton (coronation beach) ... of course that sign was done up by the windsurfing association in geraldton. Very informative, and effective.

Can someone explain prhaps what the council ( or whoever doesnt want em) is bauking at ?

Was trying to keep this quiet from Bolgo, Chief and Security, but oh well, in the interests of adding to the humour of other people's misfortune... (Yes I know, not really funny, particularly if kite had not ended up in tree, but instead cleaned up pedestrian).

I too put a kite in The Tree on the 18th. It was a blue kite, but I do not think the kite referred to in Jags' post was mine: a landing, not launching error; and, certainly only ended up in the first tree.

Anyway, after having a sensational session at PP the proceeding Friday on the 8m in 25-30 knotts, all was looking good for Tuesday.

Got to PP after work and as I went out, two kiters came in. One guy was just managing to hold down a 10, so wasn't too worried about an 8.

Anyway, as it turned out the kiting was sh1t. Gusty as all f.... Also really high tide so pretty choppy.

As no-one there to land the kite, dropped the bar with the kite in the corner and standing about 30m out.

Proceeded to walk to kite holding on to safety line. Then gust came through, picked kite up, and lost grip on line. Kite ended up in that lovely tree which is perfectly positioned to stop kites blowing down Hackett Drive.

Passer-by helped me up the tree and managed to get to the lei valve.

Nice little tear and will be seeing Neil shortly.

The VI !!!

PS. interesting to know whether the inexperienced people Jags reffered to in his post were going out on 12m kites when it was pretty bloody windy?

hmmmm
where's the logic in that?
the gusts were too windy perhaps
or maybe the conditons did suit kiting, a decision most made on that day
or if they did go out came back in when thay realised it wasnt safe

i'm with jjd, it wasn't too windy as such. the mean wind strength would have been fine its just the occasional strong gust that was the problem, i was down there as well so its not just heresay. jjd didnt look overpowered from what i could tell.

I had a great blast on Tues afternoon at PP

Only thing u need for those sort of conditions is some common sense and THE RIGHT SIZE OF KITE

i.e. a 5M foil in my case

Kiting with only 2 or 3 other kites leaves plenty of room to cope with the gusts

kite to the conditions der

i went out as well, not to my liking, too windy or too gusty what does it matter,or maybe when it gets windier it gets gustier, now theres a thought

ur kites are in the trees and lucky they didnt catch grandma, or mum and the kids cycling past or the lines chop some ones limbs off

dont give a rats if u smash ur kite, i do if u f it up for others or multilate my family

there is something between the ears that needs to be used, sometimes

conditions did not suit:

- a fun kite;
- beginners;
- 12m kites (unless you are one of those fatties who have recently been enquiring as to whether they should be using a board equivalent to the Queen Mary);
- landing a kite on one's own without risking lines ripping thru fingers and kites ending in trees

(see Bolgo, I new I shouldn't have publicly admitted my own f-up on this forum)

(the real point i was trying to raise )
thoughtout are live we strive to become good at something it does not matter if it is interlectual or physical. it takes a great deal of training, time and effort . you dont hear thing like Lleyton Hewitt won his fist grand slam the second day he picked up a racket .
so the question is why do most new kiteboards think that they will be a natural and not need lessons . as a newbie myself i value my live and bone structure to much to not have lesson and if you are going to spend say $2000 on equipment don't you think it would be worth spending another $200 on how to use it .

Sigh ... the old issue of how to approach someone who looks like they might not have the pre-requisite experience for any particular site ...

My 2c worth:
When you say to someone "do you know what you're doing" 90% will immediately get their backs up.
Perhaps try "G'day, my name is ......, how's it going - I haven't seen you down here before? Can I help you? We get a strong current here that catch you out pretty easily" etc

Any psychologist's out there who can provide expert advise on how to approach people without copping agro?

I know many people have tried to help others by providing advice and have copped an earful of abuse for their troubles - as can been seen on this forum, it's really important that more experienced people don't hesitate to give local advice to prevent incidents/accidents.

Cheers,
