Hahahah!

NO decent Hotels !

NO decent nightlife,bars etc!

Maui is unique. Lots of wind when you are going,so you wont really miss those things.

You will need a 7 m!

The locals tend to carry 8,10 and 12m kites
(or 7,9,11)

It's awesome and don't believe the hype about the attitude on the beaches. The locals are super friendly.

looks a bit mental, my kites are all east coast based, 12 m f one, 13 m fuel 17.5 m machine, all too big by the look of things, have you guys been to OAHU, Ive heard they have less wind, **** loads of americans and too many hotels but at least I don't have to buy new kites for one trip. Any thoughts? , locations for kiting ect, places to stay ect??
thanks for the help, you may have saved me a new kite range

Hey MC,

For Maui you'll need a 12 for light winds, and an 8 for nukin' Pro Beach which is what you think of when you see the videos, has a bit of attitude but ton too bad, Action Beach which is 100m away is friendly with loads of instructors and friendly people. Wind is usually a bit gusty and it gets crowded in frobt of Pro beach, better to ride upwind to lowers or ride out front of Canoe Beach.

The other guys are right, Maiu has pretty much no night life apart from Casanovas on Wednesday (long time ago) even that was crap. You'll be too tired anyway. Lanes (next to Ho'okipa) is good but treacherous launch and dangerous when it is BIG.

Ask around for accom at the beach when you get there. You can also ride Kehei on the other side which is not so mental. Winds are milder and water is less choppy, waves are also much smaller. Ask around at Action beach.

Hope this helps

Haven't been there for a while, but Oahu actually is worth a look, once you get out of Honalulu. There's a Robby Naish vid shot on Oahu of him slalom windsurfing across epic water. There are some wonderful beaches as you wind around the coast. You will need to hire a car. Another idea is to go to Kuaii. Much less crowded that Maui. And has a reputation as being incredibly beautiful. I'd leave your itinery open, maybe check out Oahu, then get on an inter island plane ans see some other islands. I love Maui north shore, but I HATE crowds when I kite so I'd go somewhere else. So many options in Hawaii.

I've got a mate who lives on Kuaii and says that the locals can be pretty heavy. I don't know which beaches he's talking about but thought you might like to know. He said it is the nicest looking island of them all though, I've seen photos of his house overlooking a massive waterfall surrounded by jungle and can tell you he's not wrong.

Kailua Bay on Oahu (45mins from Waikiki) should be good. When it is 20 knots on Oahu, more likely about 30 on Maui. 12m is fine most days at Kailua. Take your bigger kite just in case, however you will most probably be better off with a 8 or 9m also.

You will need a car in Maui. I stayed around at the resorts on the west coast, about 45 minutes drive to Kite Beach. Only 10 minutes from Honolua bay. Went in November and saw a couple of days where the locals were riding 6m kites (overpowered on 8's) and other days I rode my 12. Wind is a bit gusty at the launch if there is a bit of East in it, but 100m out it is fine. Water is quite smooth also considering the strength of the winds.

No night life in Maui, but you will be kiting that much you won't be able to do much else.

Enjoy.

OK. If you are after holiday unit type accom. you would be better off over at Kihei. There are several resort type places on the beach, with kiting right out front. Try "Sunsets" great grass rigging area.
If you want to go to kite beach etc. you will need a car for the 20 min cross island trip.
Oh yes,and Kihei gets HELL windy!! Once again, you will need a 7 or 8 to get the full benifet /
