You have to cross the shipping lane. This could be an issue. I would go to the Port of Melbourne website and see if you can get the departure and arrivals times for ships, then try to find a good time gap where no shipping activity is scheduled. That said, ships can arrive early and depart early if loading is completed ahead of schedule.

I think to be safe you should have a support boat but many would say HTFU and just do it. But you really don't want to be stuck in the shipping lane with a kite malfunction and a Panamax container vessel bearing down on you!

Have done the trip from Pt Ormond to Williamstown on a sailboard, and back.

maybe 20 mins. and in a Northerly.

The only problem would be a gear failure in the shipping channel, so have a spotter and make sure you are complying with all boating regs so spotter can call the water police.

No laws against navigating the stretch, but I can see a stack of on spot fines they will be looking to hand out once they have you on board.

a sailboarder at Pt Ormond broke a uni joint and got rescued by water police. as they dropped him and his kit off at beach he got handed a fine for not wearing a life jacket.
there were over 10 others sailing right there and past the police boat all without life jackets and never given a second thought.
must be their way of getting petrol money.

Have done this trip in about a 30 knot southerly,
took about an hour and a half,
met a massive ship in the channel ,no hassel just stayed down wind of him,
The swell was big out there ,We didnt have a rescue boat ,would b a good idea ,
Also ,it is a long way on one tack, make sure you can ride toeside,

Have fun
