im currently getting lessons in st kilda - instructor is damn good and the bonus - he can actually kiteboard. It seems that most of the guys teaching around here have little to no exp - i suppose its called on the job training. NO STUPID LAND BUGGIES, or frills, just kiteboarding (my mate went with another company and it seemed they progressed him slowly to ensure plenty of return lessons). He was recommended to me by another on the forum so im not just a bias newb.
PM me if you want a contact number
Cheers
Al

richrelative: I saw your other post, and now you're saying you've been flying a kitesurfing kite on a footy field for weeks, with no harness therfore no depower, feeling 'tuff'. How tuff is that kid who killed himself on a footy field in Airlie Beach a few years back? Flying a kitesurfing kite on a footy field is the stupidest thing you could possibly do... maybe when you learn a bit more you'll understand why.

It sounds to me like your instructor's right, you ARE an idiot. You're the type who gets kiting banned, takes out yourself and maybe innocent bystanders, and generally gives kiting a bad name.

If you've got time/access to post on this forum, you should be reading forums about how to learn safely... coz you're NOT doing it at the moment and it's not the way to make friends.

70 bucks for how long, to add my instructor was good until it came to the physics of it and explaining how to use the chicken loop, it was a fly and learn lesson, i think it was a bit better but the pre flight talk should have been far more informative, may b i should be using a proxy.

are you sure he said kite loops? perhaps he was referring to figure of 8's rather than loops..

eating sand and getting dragged 50m is all part of the fun learning curve i'm afraid, i've done it and i'd imagine most people have had similar experiences when learning (my girlfriend was concussed when learning, i've got a small scar on my hand from my first lesson with a large(ish) kite)

keep flying the kite and you'll get to where you want to be. so who was the instructor?

i didnt have lessons and tuaght myself just fine, back then lessons werent exactly the done thing. I know people should proably get lessons for safety reasons but if i had a frend getting into it i wouldnt tell him to have lessons.

Surely not everyone here has had lessons????

Surely this is not the case for most people learning! I can't believe it! I've only taught one person - my Dad, and if I'd knocked him out, or even bowled out his falsies he would have given me a clip round the ears (his words, not mine). I see lessons happening around here all the time, and the place is certainly not awash with blood and teeth.

$70 = 1 hour
Hmm i decided to get lessons as i dont want to smash my kite or my mates - rather smash my instructors kite and cop the inital costs rather than ruining my personal kite. I figure thats why kite instructor's charges seem a little steep (next to sailboarding) - my instructor was telling me that two of his kites were smashed the day before my lesson, and the kid after my lesson managed to smash the living **** out of another one.
lol - poor kites
Al
Boom - for all i know we probably have the same guy you just got him at a bad moment - imagine watching everyone around you having fun in perfect wind conditions and your stuck on land helping us - does he wear a large straw hat?

stnkygoat, ya concussion is an extreme case but i think a fair amount of people would lose control at one point and get dragged (painless or otherwise) for a few metres at least.

i can't comprehend why kite loops would be a topic of conversation in a lesson, IMO they're an advanced kite maneuver that should only be tried well after the lesson stage no matter the wind level.

i've also never seen a newbie try a kite loop in a lesson or otherwise so it's all a bit odd

Geez Galah,

I hope you weren't talking about me there... And I don't think Sean's the kinda guy that would do those types of things down there either. Who else teaches down there now?

Damo, the reason no one has been killed, or even suffered the slightest injury on the Swan is that the instruction is undertaken with the highest regard for safety, by IKO qualified instructors. The group sizes are small, and the lessons conducted out into the river, allowing for maximum amount of distance from the beach.
I think there are other completely different reasons for your beef. Namely that the students might sometimes be in your line of fire, preventing you from coming in dangerously close to the launch area to do your tricks. While the worst accident that any of my students have had is being bitten by a blowie, you are out for the season for unfortunate practice techniques on the land. There is plenty of room at Peli Point for everyone, and it is the ideal place for beginners to learn and build confidence. We were all beginners once, so get over yourself and stop slating the hard work and reputation of others. Nat - Peli Point Instructor

Lookup,

I have seen you do kiteloops etc near the launch area

Not so much you, but the other guy who teaches with the Slingshot kite is dangerous and totally in the way. At least you gys use small kites and short lines, but the Slingy guy:

- is right in the area where people go in and out from the launch area (which also is a nice flat area)
- has students who are crashing an 8m kite on 27m lines - I have seen a few close calls and have almost been cleaned up myself.

Nat,

I don't think damo is really talking about students getting in the way. We both know there is no easy solution for that and there is still a fair whack of space at peli even on busy days.

I've seen a couple things going on that have confused me and its more to do with lessons in nuking winds and leaving students unattended. I also don't know the exact situation, skills, performance of kites etc so you guys are in a better place to call that than i am.
