Hi Guys,

Living on Sydney northern beaches, and having gone for the first lesson, I am now in the position of needing to buy a kite. I weigh 90Kgs. I will for now only be purchasing a single bow or hybrid kite.

What size kite do you reccon would be the best for a 90Kg beginner on the Northern beaches. What wind range would you expect I woiuld then be able to fly the kite in.

Also, What size board would you couple that with.

Thanks for the help - Matthew.

I'd say anywhere from a 12m to a 14m would be fine, in winds from 14 to around 25 knots (providing it's a bow), even though a 12 may struggle in the 13 knot zone.

As you're a beginner, it would be easiest to start on a bow kite, also safest too due to the depower, infact there is really no reason to use a C kite until you become fairly advanced.

I have a sligshot turbo 2, but there are plenty other great kites out there that others swear by eg waroos, monkey griffins etc. It also depends upon your budget.

Try get the later model kites - the main reason being they have better safety system.

For the board, I rekn a big board is always easier so between 130 and 150 is usually good (I have a 147). If you're up on the northern beaches, which is also where I kite, then you'll want one with a bit of flex to soak up the chop, but not too much, you'll find that out when you start doing pops.

Go into one of the stores over there - such as balmoral boards or... I forgot the other one's name, but its near fisherman's beach... they'll show you a few kites too and talk you through it.. they know a lot more than me

Im 90 Kg's riding a North Rebel on a 132 board in anywhere from 13 knots up to 25.

I reakon a good Bow kite will be best. Slingshot Rev or T2 maby T3.

Jimmy,

Thanks for yiour reccomendatin on kite/board sizes. Would their be much difference int he turnign speed of a 14 vrs 12 Meter kite?

BTW have spoken to The guys at balmoral boards - just not wanting to purchase a new kite at this stage, and they dont have and suitable ex demos avaialble.

thanks again - Matthew.

i`m 90kgs and ride a crossbow 2 its fine between 12-30knt i would now buy a switchblade3 because of it`s lighter bar pressure. the cabrinhas have the best safety system in my opinion. just push the bar through the override knotch and if you let go of the bar the kite falls out of the sky. pick up the bar and relaunch.too easy.

First and importantly - Sydney Northern Beaches Summer wind is always about 8-10knots less than the airport and southern beaches, while I reckon Palmy gets about 5 knots more. That puts most of the northern beaches summer winds at about 10-15knot averages.

So, If i'm 68kgs and I find my 12 meter bow marginal on the Northern Beaches most times - at 90kgs you will want a 14 meter kite at the minimum. Especially if you want to be on a board smaller than 142.

Infact a 14 meter bow kite will give you a huge range and will cover you for winds up to 25knots as a beginner, perhaps a little more with experience.

Winter Southerlies or Westerlies are a different story - and you'll find you WILL need a 2 kite quiver - a 10 meter will be your best bet.

Cheers

Tom

Im 87kg and get on okay with a 12m SB and 135 nobile.

I would say a 12m or 14m....

I would recommend either a SS turbo or a SB3.
But only cause they are the only ones I have flown.

Yer i would Recomend a 12, 13, 14. If you can get away with a 12 do that becuase it will be faster. 13's are great..

I work at Balmoral Boards. We have a fair few T2's, and Revs which i reakon would be yours best bet. The T2 is amazing for any kiter and there going for a good price. If you buy your kite from us we also lend you a board to get started on. Come in and have a chat with us

Cheers Al

There would be yes, it depends on which kite specifically, but generally I'd say that between the 11m and 14 of the TD2 (the only kite I have had a bit of experience with), the 11m seems to be around 25% faster through the turns (this is TOTALLY an estimate/guess), having flown a mates for a few sessions.

HOWEVER, there is an irony to it all. Particularly when you begin to do some jumps etc. A faster turning kite is more responsive and hence grabbing the wrong part of the bar in a jump will send your kite crashing or even more fun(not really if you can't land) looping and actually make it more difficult, big kites also have higher hang times obviously. From what I've seen there is a happy medium between kite the responsiveness and control of the kite, as more response doesnt necessarily mean that you have greater control... often the converse.

So really anything between 12m and 15m should be fine for you taking into account turning speed, the average windspeed around here as well as power you'll need. Personally I'd go for the middle sizes (ie 13 and 14m) just because of how versitile they are.

Hey Matt, we're the "other" kite store on Anzac Ave in Collaroy near Fisherman's Bay

The previous posts recommending suitable kite sizes sound spot on and a choice of bow kite will certainly help with the majority of seabreezes behind us and the gusty winter winds ahead.

If you're looking for somthing second hand we currently have used and ex-demo bows in both 12m and 14m that are worth a look (or a fly on the beach )

Hope that helps!
