I'm an 80kg beginner with 3 years power kiting under my belt. I've had all the on safety, water re-launch, and self rescue but now the hard bit. What gear to buy. So far I've got a 12m and am looking for a 16m but what length do I go on the board? I've had various advise about the bigger the better to start with. I can see why, but I don't want to be needing a new board in 3 months. The questions are, as a beginner, will I notice the difference between boards? Is 130 too short? Is 148 too long? Does 18cm make such a big difference?

Help, please! Any comments will be appreciated.

for what its worth Id grab a big fat cheap 2nd hand TT. Certainly no less than 150 up to even 180. Flick it in 3 months for what you want then or keep it for lightwind board ?? Lots for sale cheap as.

Why I am really replying is

power kiting as I call it is land based kite activities like snowkiting, buggying, generally being dragged around etc. I started with some flexifoil stackers and open foil kites 3 years ago and now its led to kitesurfing...... and more toys.

Gotcha - thanks.
Thought it might be some weird & wonderful new jet-backpack/kite combo or something? that could replace domestic airfares
If youve been flying kites like that for a while my guess is you wont be needing a big board for very long at all - maybe you could just borrow one for a few sessions. Lots of kiters have a lightwind board they rarely ever use.
Ask around.
Good Luck.

go for a bigger board for sure...

but realise a big board can be short and wide.. so in fact you could have a 140x46 cm TT with fairly flat rockerline, this would be a larger board than a 142x38 with a deep rocker..

confused yet?

a mate of mine has learnt on an underground FLX 142. it was the first board he bought and got the hang of it very quickly. he only has the one kite, a 12m and weighs a bit more than 80kgs but it is amazing the amount of range he has with the one kite.

Yes i started on a Slingshot SX 132 - great board
Then i got a Underground 122 FLX - great board also
I didn't relised how totally different these boards are from each other till i rode them both in one session. For example the Slingshot SX 132 doesn't really flex compared to the Underground FLX 122. I found that the extra 10cm and the stiffness in the Slingshot SX 132 aloud me to get up and planning and go up wind easier. But the Underground FLX 122 had a more skatey feel to it, it popped off the water better and i felt i could carve nice big turns with a lot more power.
It felt more like 20cm - 30cm difference in the boards due to the amount stiffness/ flex each had.....
