I'm making a board for a bit of fun. I vacuum bagged 4 layers of 3mm ply onto the base of another board and it came out perfectly but with quite a bit more flex than the original. I'm deciding whether or not to laminate another layer of ply to stiffen it up. Wondering what difference a flexy board has over a stiff one? I imagine more flexible would go upwind better and ride smoother but wouldn't be as fast. Anyone got any answers?
Merry Xmas guys!

a flexy board will give you a smoother ride in choppy water, it will "walk" over the bumps. it will also make landings softer and a soft tail will be easier to spring off for jumps.
a stiffer board will be harder to ride, but once you have the timing and edging dialled in you will get heaps better pop than from a flexy board. it will also feel tighter and more responsive.
there are other factors; the flex may have to be adjusted to suit the rocker, profile, fin size and configuration, concave, width and length of the board.
this is just my opinion. best way to find out is to experiment!

Yep, thanks kind of what I thought.
Hey this is a cool and easy way to make a board if you have vacuum equip. 15$ for a sheet of ply. I wrapped the ply blank in 6 oz glass and its as tough as any production board and seems to be about the same weight. The glass stiffened it up considerably although it is still nicely flexy... I wrapped the board I was copying in glad-wrap so it wouldn't stick and then cast 4 layers of 3mm Luan ply straight on to it. I used epoxy to bond the layers and put it in a plastic bag and sucked the air out. You get a perfect cast, concaves, rocker, whatever your original has. You can cut it down to make a smaller board or leave the overhang to a limit to make it larger. I then shaped the rails and glassed it. If you didn't want to glass it just go for 5 layers of ply and varnish it well. Foot-straps from Cut-loose for $24 and some rubber from Clarks for the footpads. I'm yet to get her in the water (I still have to polish out the bottom).
