Apparently the estuary is the place to kite, lots of flat and shallow water....but gusty. works on SW for sure, not sure of other winds.
Few places on the estuary

else the ocean is good at back beach....bunbury

else you can kite at the beach next to the estuary opening, never seen anyone kite it but think it would be awesome on a NW'ly but be careful as there is a major shipping lane not too far out.

Eh??

Hi,
I kite regularly at the Estuary and back beack. The wind is not as clean and reliable like Perth, but there are heaps of space and it is kiteable in most conditions.

Best is SW'ly, but in the winter we kite lot on the NW'ly. S'ly is also fun.

have a look at google map and you'll easily spot the kite areas.

ive kited the estuary a bit, southern end mostly. once or twice near the australind boat ramp (?)

never really had good wind there because never really been the right time of year.

where do you launch at back beach, can u get 4wd access onto the beach?

back beach is ****e.its just chop mainly. i wouldnt really call it a wave spot (although dont have much experience in wave kiting)
if you are looking for flat water go estuary.

and i dont think there is 4wd access to back beach.there is no need.the setup is like the perth beaches-right on the mainroad.

I agree, back beach is not a good wave riding spot cos the waves break too close to shore. But I still have fun there ... sometimes I just get bored of the flat water and want to hit some ramps :)

The best wave riding spot is the CUT, but you need strong winds to make enough ground to surf the waves off the two breakwalls.... long rides, awesome fun, But NEVER EVER drop your kite there... you are 150-200m from the shore with two nasty groynes waiting for you[}:)]

On the big round about going south, take the right exit off, (Left exit is to dunsborough) then turn first right. Then when you get to the little roundabout turn left follow the road to the ocean and ye will discover the cut......

I've been in Gero for a few years but took the gear down last time I visited the oldies.

The estuary is great fun for flat water. I also had a crack of Koombana Bay in a dodgey and gusty easterly but just try not to upset the dolphin hugging hippies.

Back beach is average but thats just Bunbury, choppy conditions with the seabreeze and no decent surf........ I'm probably just spoiled now and will never be happy anywhere but my beloved Gero......sniff sniff.

To all the boys in Bunbury good luck. I was over there to catch up with family and friends, spending half of my youth in that place I took up windsurfing just to keep my gills watered. Yep Australind inlet "Boat Ramp" can get very gusty ...but boosting is huge !
And the cut is not bad so long as you don't stay out longer than the changing tide. Man I remember getting caught with the tide and 20 of us surfing were paddling wide to get out of the current. Over an hour to get back even swapped my board for a boogie to a friend to save from cramps, luckly a goat boat managed to drag me in. Had a kite at Secret Harbour on my way down. I'd love to try a downwinder from Busselton to the Caple Cut, next time I'm back I love to catch up with the new school as I do downwinders from my place on the sunny coast. Only difference is we have outer surf banks were you can push the speed and load up before hitting 3-4 foot wave and gainning a 30-50 foot air. But hey each to their own I say. Have fun guys and hello to the boys at Binninup.
