The following article was written by a dude in South Africa... it rings true for Perth...so thought this forum may enjoy

"There's something core about kiteboarding in winter time. Rigging your kit in cold murky conditions, and going out in gusty wind while the rain is hitting your face so hard it feels like needles.
It's almost as you get excited everytime there is some rain predicted. In winter time, those few hours before the rain hits are what the few winter warriors live for.
But there's something more to it than just kiteboarding in conditions that most pull their noses up for. Kiteboarding in winter is not just about bigger swell. When you're out there in the rain and you have the whole ocean to yourself, the whole beach to yourself - knowing that you are out there on your own and if something goes wrong it's just you, the ocean and a empty beach, you experience a different kind of enjoyment.
For that session time stands still, and for a moment you feel like you're kiting in a unpopulated and untouched world. You're on your own. You're in your own world. And it's kiteboarding paradise.
A few weeks into winter, and it's almost hard to believe that there ever was something like white sandy beaches, long summer downwinders, kiting in sunset, hooking up for drinks after a kiting session, and all the other summer fun.
When you run into one of your mates in winter time and ask them when was the last time they kited, only to hear them say "I only kite in summer", or "it's too cold in winter", or "I don't like gusty conditions", or even "I only kite when the swell picks up", there's something that makes you cut the conversation short.
In this world where people form their personalities by the cars they drive, the clothes they wear and the kites they fly, where people have specific preferences to certain luxuries and even the kind of food that they eat in a time where people are dying of hunger, you suddenly have a different outlook on overparticular kiteboarders.
Perhaps kiteboarding, like skateboarding and surfing, has become too commercialised. The core element of our sport has been stripped out, people can now walk into a shopping mall and buy a kite in a surf shop, and are up and riding in a few days with personalised instruction. People kite way to close to each other when there is a whole ocean to enjoy. There is a lack of respect to one another and other water users on the water in general.
Fortunately kiteboarding, just like surfing and skateboarding has almost become big enough to sprout into a underground movement where people unite and kite for the core reasons that made kiteboarding available to us in the first place. A small group of riders are kiting out there riding to not just enjoy kiteboarding, but also to enjoy the elements.
Kiteboarding is about enjoying the elements and making use of what mother nature presents you. It's about being creative and making the best out of every situation. People complain about not being able to perform any tricks in less than 10 or 12 knots, yet I have seen riders doing freestyle tricks in 9 or 10 knots - based on a completely different style of riding that is currently known to us through magazines and videos. People complain about the cold, gusty wind, lack of waves, some have even reached a stage where they prefer to not kite if there's no waves, others only go out when it's 20 knots or more, others only when it's summer time. The commercial media of today would make us believe that you need 20 knots plus, that you need to be able to do handle passes, always need to have the latest and greatest kites, that you need to do kiteloops, that you need warm mater, palm trees and waves to be able to enjoy kiteboarding.
But every once in a while you run into a fellow waterman. There's no need to exchange words. A quick acknowledgement is all that's needed. The next time you meet will be on some rainy beach. The sky will be grey, it'll be cold and the wind gusty. It will be paradise."

Hey dudes,

I think that Carlos is full of it. I've been kiting for more than 4 and a half years and have tried every aspect of the sport even some rather stupid stuff that I wish to forget. I have been involved in kite retail, profesional kiting, kiting instruction, kiting associations and every other facet of this great sport, which I believe gives me the entitlement to have an opinion, and to say that you are truly core or part of some underground movement just because you ride in s#@t conditions throughout winter is a lot of blowing wind up your own skirt.

If you thumb your nose up at people because they only ride in good conditions, in big surf only, or in strong winds, then you're probably so full of it that the rest of us wouldn't want to talk to an arrogant, self riteous dick like you anyway. Who do you think you are Mr "Winter Warrior"? With a self description like that, you show your own self deluded fantasy world that you live in.

Everyone kites for the same reason, to gain personal enjoyment from the sport. If you only enjoy the sport for the rush of overpowered conditions or in big surf, then that would be probably more, as you say, "core" than you! And what if you only like 15 steady knots in smooth water on sunny aftrenoon seabreezes, does this mean that the rider is less passionate than you about the sport. I don't think so!

Most of the people I know kite at every opportunity and this includes winters because we enjoy the sport. I personally am not really interested in going out in 9-10 knots and doing some lame freestyle because this doesn't give me the kick I want from the sport, so does this make me too soft core for you???

Half of the attitude in this sport comes from people like you who think they are better than everyone else or think they are more hard core. This attitude is what is spoiling this previously great culture. When I first started kiting in January 2000, there was only one other guy and we self taught and embraced anyone who came down and started to get into the sport. It became a real family and we encouraged each other and laughed at each other and had a commeraderie that you can't buy. We had a band of friends that gradually grew until this lame attitude **** started coming in to the sport started by people who reckon they are better than others for one reason or another. Then some guys wouldn't talk to others and so started the divisions in the sport.

Bottom line is, everybody gets something out of kiting and it isn't all the same thing. To judge people because they don't sail in winter, don't go out in surf, don't ride wakeboards, don't do mobes or board offs is f@%ked up! Just ride for yourself and keep your crappy deluded visions of self grandeur to yourself you ****er!
Who cares if you ride in winter or summer or if you like swell or not, what other people enjoy from the sport is none of your business and you should keep your mindless ideals to yourself.

As for you being a waterman??? I have been bodysurfing, skindiving, scuba diving, water skiing, sailing dinghys, yachting, windsurfing, kiting, wakeboarding, swimming and surfing for almost 30 years and I don't consider myself a "Waterman". True watermen are guys like Laird Hamilton, Robbie Naish, Peter Cabrinha, Rush Randle and others. True champions of each discipline they indulged in and conquered. Wake up! Your in a dream world mate!

It's crap like this that really pisses me off.

Sorry Andrew! Just struck the wrong chord with me!

Hey Kitehard,

I hear what your saying... and to tell you the truth I reckon the Perth kite surfing crowd is pretty true to the core. Core - ie. into kitesufing for the enjoyment of it, not to pose. People who think they are better because they can do more tricks, or handle harder conditions etc have just got a big ego (and would be classed as a wan#er by the average WA kiter). Poseur - I mean like the guys who ride ducati's to ride to their local cafe and back and never use their bike for its intended use, the guy who plays guitar in a crap band so he can get the chicks, the surfer who wears the clothes and has a board strapped to his roof but prefers to pull cones in the car park than get wet. I have no time for the poseur or guy with the inflated ego..

If your out their having fun, enjoying the thrill of your sport, and dont give a **** about ego, thats what its all about in my book!

Ive been kiting for 3 seasons... and can't even do a kite loop, but hay, I have a grin form ear to ear the whole time Im out on the water, and for me thats what its all about...

you can tell there is no wind... this is getting very philosophical!

Come on Kitehard cant you enjoy it for what it was, a enjoyable bit of fiction that makes every rider who enjoyes his water sports during our winter fronts feel hardcore. Lighten up dood
If there is wind and im not working im out there kiting. i used to be out there windsurfing and if there is no wind im surfing. I do not particularly stand out at any of these sports and as such would not say i am a waterman. But i am way more keen than 80% of my friends who enjoy the same sports. I am so passionate about getting out there when it is on that over the years it has cost me several relationships. I could be on a date and the wind comes up, well i just have to go. If i am in a job that dosent allow me flexability to go when its on, i quit. Hence i am now self employed. Surly people with a passion such as mine can almost claim the title of Waterman. CANT THEY!!.
Oh yeah Andrew if you stop flying Sandgroper Kites and start flying Best kites im sure you will be doing kite loops before you know it.

Talking about winter wind, It could be on sat arvo and Sunday.
And talking about hard core dudes, there are a few kiters that are regularly kiting scarbs thru winter. Now i have been doing lieghton and the shore break there can put you in youre place, but to brave scarbs in a front on a kite. I think that is pretty hardcore!!
Regards constantly stoked Allan

Hey Keysey,

If it was just a work of fiction which only spoke about the joys of winter kiting then that would be great, because I love winter gusterlies as much as the next bloke (or chick):-) But the fact of the matter is this guy started creating an elitist attitude looking down on people who don't like the wintery conditions or looking down on anyone who is less passionate.

Thats bull****! Maybe there are a lot of ****ers in South Africa who do the sport for the wrong reasons but here in Oz, I reckon everyone is equally passionate from the beginner on their first lesson the the pro of more than 3 seasons.

If you had known the sport back in the first earliest days, and how cool EVERYONE was, you would know what I mean.

The attitude makes me sick. And Flake, you don't have to read every post mate. I was hoping to enlighten people to the attitude creeping into the sport by this kind of post.

I AM chilled and will probably see yas on the water today. Have fun and kite hard!

G'Day all,

I was just having a bit of fun. Bored and no wind worth speaking of and I don't mind being in the midst of a bit of controversy to spark a bit of thought and discussion.

But also on a more serious note, just wanted to make a point. I know Andrew enjoyed parts of the article, but we need to make sure we don't develop these eletist attitudes and remember that everyone enjoys kiting, and we all do it for fun so lets keep it that way. West Oz is the best place in the world to kite no doubt!

Maybe it'd different in South Africe because as Carlos said, they define their personalities by the cars they drive, the kites they buy and the food they eat. Wow! sounds like a crap place to live.

Hey Andrew
Just taking the piss, cheap shot, no offence ment. I used to and still have as part of my Quiver a brand very similar to yours. The H/R (wich met an early death) rocked, but the med/aspect wich resembles yours flys well anough but it turns like **** for an 8 mtr. Regardless it is a loved part of my quiver and i have a ball from 25-35 knots on this baby. As i said it resembles yours, and even though it looks the same, allegedly it is not.
