hey, i'm a newbie to kiteboarding and have been out 4-5 times. My question is how long should my lines be? should they be shorter for a beginner, or in stronger winds? i noticed the other day my lines were a couple of metres longer than some other guys, he couldn't tell me why either. i think mine are 27m, on my 11m fuel. Also can someone point me in the direction of a web site or any resource that explains how i can put the 5th line system on my 05 fuels, it sounds like a good system for learning.
Thanks in advance

Stock Line lengths should be ok. You'll hardly notice the difference between 25-28 meters or so. Bigger changes happen at 30+ or less than 20m. Main thing is don't worry about it yet.
5th lines are a good idea, but make sure you learn to relaunch the normal way.

thanks for your reply, good to know my lines are somewhere in the ball park. Why wouldn't you recommend using 5th line all the time is this as it can it get tangled, i have only heard good things about the system and wondered why it wasn't just standard if it was so good. Also if anyone can provide a good resource on setting up the 5th line on a fuel that'd be great.
cheers

The slingshot site has a pdf file on the setting up of their 5th line system.. But it is for the "oneline" setup that they sell. If your gonna make your own look at a few of the other kites to see how it is done. Probably better if you look at earlier model kites (late 2004 and early 2005) some of the newer systems have pullies and cleats etc that will only complicate things. Tuning the length of the line is the most critical part and if your just wanting it for relaunch then I would imagine that you want it to be just a tad slack so it doesn't mess with the preformance of the kite. Only one of my Slingshots has the 5th line (17.5 Machine)and quite frankly I wouldn't bother.. Just my 2c

Luke aka howley wasnt warning you off 5th lines, he was just advising you to learn how to water re-launch the basic way, the 4 line method. If you've had any lessons you will prob recall the instructor teaching you to water re-launch using only 4 lines, this is the basic's that everyone should learn along with the self rescue.

There is a myriad of line combinations out there these days thanks to advances in R & D by all companies which all basically operate around the good old 4 line method. Learn it till you got it down pat, then learn it some more, then use a 5th line system...

5th line is not a miracle re-launch system as you still need to know the 4 line method. 5th line is more of a 100% depower safety system when used correctly...

ok, thats very helpful guys, thanks. I can relaunch fine with the four lines, the depower without tangle sounds pretty good. i guess i'll go another few weeks making sure i'm confident with the four then give the 5 line setup a go, thanks for the ss link on their site can't believe i missed it!
cheers

if u want to make a cheap 5th line system it is quite easy.
U need preferably the thicker sort of spectra for like 3-4m initially so u can pull it in without hurting ur hands. Then u need like 20m of normal line and then some thicker spectra the rest of the way. The length of the attachment line on the kites leading edge should be approximately level with the wing tips given that the 5th line attached to the bar is similar length ur actual lines.

Basic thing is make it too long initially then u can make it shorter, if u make it too short ur gonna have a little trouble.
