I just sold my 5 11 srt surfboard and got a really rude shock when I went to send it with Fastway couriers. I estimated it would cost about about $30 as thats what i have paid in the past with the same company.
It was only going from sunny coast to yamba -
about 400 km.
When i rocked up at the depot the guy asked if i had an account - I said no this is a one off so it was called a cash sale - so he goes - that will be $66 -
anyway I reckon it as a bit steep ...but had no choice as I promised to send it that day.

I recently posted a 10m Switchblade and bar and pump with Australia Post for about $30 from Sunny Coast to NSW - they have a size on their website that you have to stick to so make a box up that size and squeeze everything in.

Hi Bruce,

When sending a surfboard, they bill you by "Cubing" which is volume as opposed to weight. Most freight companies work on an industry standard of Length x Width x Depth all in cm x 250. So for a surfboard I sent recently it was 200 x 55 x 8cm , therefore 2.0 x .55 x .08 = .088 x 250 = 22kg.

This gives you the weight charge they apply, even though the box was only about 6kg. It cost me around $30 to send the board 800km to a regional country town. I later was quoted $65 to send another surfboard to Sydney, same cubing in place.

It pays to shop around. Some companies wont even quote you unless you have an account. Because my freight requirements are small, I use a prepaid account which works out really cheap and I have no minimum spend or min freight per month, so long as my account stays in credit.

Good winds,

From what I've heard, Busfreight is the way to go but it sounds like you got shafted. Aus Post won't take anything over a meter long (?) unless you've got a business account with them.

Easy/cheap option, snap al boards in half before posting and just allow for the cost of a tube of quick dry araldite Too easy.

Prepaid bulk stickers. Just sent 4 boards (2 x surf 2 x TT)to SA from Qld. $20 each
and you can track your items' progress until they reach destination.

A kite to Melbourne from Qld is less than $30 door to door. Qld to Perth $45

Surfboard from Qld to Perth $45

Surfboard from Sunshine Coast to Yamba $8 !!

Bruce,

You sold that board to a mate of mine, he got it the next day!? Did you pay for a premium service? He was expecting it would take 2 - 3 days, but she rocked up overnight.

Gerard.

Australia post--
The last two kites i sent (kite+bar+pump) were between $15 and $20 with insurance. ACT to Central coast.

I just sent them in their own backpacks with a cut up beer carton wrapped around and gaffed.

australia post is really good for parcels. I also sent a 25kg coffee macheine to Vic for $17 (i think the corner of the box was still on the bench when they weighed it)
